A safer emergency department for behavioral health patients

When hospitals experience shortages of space designed specifically for behavioral health patients, it can lead to more patients boarding in emergency departments (EDs) for longer than average times.

“The system gets backed up, and people wind up in the final safety net: the emergency department,” says Abigail Donovan, M.D., of Massachusetts General Hospital.

Are Soft Surfaces Key To Preventing Infection?

In the expanding age of globalization, travel, novel viruses, treatment-resistant pathogens, and more recently, a global pandemic, the ability to mobilize resources to contain public health threats is imperative.

Unfortunately, multiple infectious outbreaks have revealed the gaps in knowledge and practice that contribute to the spread of disease — particularly around surfaces. If a facility's surfaces cannot be effectively cleaned, disinfected, and/or sterilized, it puts both patients and caregivers at risk for infection.

Province flagged panels on Saskatchewan Hospital roof 18 months before they failed

Provincial government officials flagged concerns about shrinking panels on the roof of Saskatchewan Hospital in North Battleford 18 months before that same issue required complete replacement of part of the new $407-million facility.

A consultant’s report obtained by the Saskatoon StarPhoenix said the resulting gaps between panels meant the roof was “fully compromised” as melting snow caused widespread leaking and temporarily displaced whole units of patients after its opening in spring 2019.
