President's Message

nancypresident-engjun.pngAnd the award goes to …

One of the highlights of CAM’s year is recognizing outstanding service by individuals and moving companies who have contributed to the growth and professionalism of the moving industry and have embodied the goals and values of our Association and, really, the betterment of the industry as a whole.

These are the folks who drive our industry and make it strong, and who bring their best game to the job. And they are the folks who do good things in their communities to make them stronger and better as well. Every day we educate consumers on how to pick credible, professional movers. The winners of the CAM awards are excellent examples of this and, we hope, an inspiration to others.

Our conference is capped off with our awards dinner – a night in which we gather with families and friends to celebrate the achievements of our compadres. Of course, last year we couldn’t gather because of COVID-19. Whether or not we will meet this year is anyone’s guess at this moment (we’ll decide a month from now).

I really hope we can get together. We need to see each other. It’s been far too long. We have so much to talk about as our industry has changed significantly in a short 18 months. But even if we are still unable to gather because of health and safety reasons, we can’t let another year go by without recognizing key individuals and members who have stepped up.

Do you have someone in mind who is deserving of recognition by our industry? There’s more information below on the award categories. I strongly suggest that you take the time to think about who would be an excellent candidate for your nomination.

There’s only a short time frame in which to get your nomination in – 38 days – so make haste!

camawards-aug242021-1a.jpg

Do you know someone in the moving business or a moving company that you feel should be recognized for their work to improve the industry? Whether it’s a long-time high-profile employee, someone behind the scenes who has dedicated their work-life to the betterment of the industry or a moving company that has gone beyond the call of duty to help their community, we’d love to know about them. Don’t miss out on recognizing someone for their awesome work!

There are several categories of awards. Our awards committee reviews all nominations and selects the most deserving recipients each year, from the list of possible nominees. Please note that not every category is automatically awarded each year.

Hansen’s Vehicle Relocation

camsupplierspotlight-hansens-aug242021.jpg

Leif Hansen founded L Hansen’s Forwarding Ltd in 1980, armed with a strong work ethic and the idea to give moving companies a viable alternative for shipping vehicles. In those days, loading vehicles alongside household goods on a trailer was standard practice. Leif had no equipment or staff at the outset but from those humble beginnings, he facilitated transport for approximately 1,000 vehicles in the first year.

Fast forward to 2021, and Hansen’s is now a national carrier with 438 employees, +250 trucks, 7 branches, and the capacity to transport well over 700,000 vehicles annually throughout North America. Hansen’s infrastructure is second to none and provides the flexibility to assist clients with moves large or small. The company serves movers, vehicle manufacturers, dealers, leasing companies, the federal government, and private individuals including “snowbirds”.

The company motto – “On Time, Damage Free, Respect” permeates the organization from top to bottom, and provides the guiding principles for employees to follow as they discharge their daily duties. As a result, you can trust Hansen’s with your vehicle, and you can rest assured that every step of the process will be done to meet the highest standards.

Hansen’s Move Management system sets the standard for the industry and is complemented by its popular online customer portal, which allows clients 24/7 access to a suite of helpful transportation options. Clients can obtain quotes, place orders, trace shipments, or print reports and POD’s at their convenience. Transparency is essential to us and our customers alike and is one of the many reasons why Hansen’s just celebrated 40 years of transportation excellence in 2020.

Come and experience the best the industry has to offer. Try Hansen’s!

There’s only one more week left to register for golf, so don’t delay in getting your name in. Deadline to register is this Monday, August 30th. We don’t need to know your names by Monday, just the number of golfers participating so we can let the golf course know.

Congratulations to Norm Mackie of Mackie Moving Systems, the winner of the “Tee Box Advantage” Contest, who will have his round paid for by CAM supplier Advantage Box.

Join us at the beautiful Carlisle Golf Club for our 25th annual golf day. Lunch and post-game meals and beverages, cart, swag bag, and the reprise of last year’s popular Snowbird’s Auto Connection’s hole-in-one game are included.

And great news, there are no restrictions on the number of golfers we can have and registration has already been brisk! Register here and check out our foursome rate—and save $50!

And we can’t do this without support. A big thank you to our sponsors. Would you like to get in on the sponsoring and prizing fun? Contact nancy@mover.net.

Forbes Provides Guidance on Move Tipping

cam-aug242021-5.pngLeading American business media company Forbes has offered guidance to readers on how much to tip moving company employees after completing their move.

Pointing out to consumers that there is no standard for tipping the moving crew, Forbes quoted one industry expert that recommended $6 to $12 per hour per crew member dependent upon the size and distance of the move. Forbes also recommended tipping each of the crew individually and not simply giving it all to the crew leader.

How telematics and big data have revolutionized truck leasing

cam-aug242021-6.jpgFull-service leases are becoming increasingly customizable, as telematics and big data are allowing lessors to better predict operating and repair costs. Pulling data off the trucks and tapping into OEM partnerships allows full-service leasing providers to know exactly how much it costs to operate a specific make and model in comparable applications, and even when repairs should be scheduled.

This, in turn, gives them the confidence to put together plans custom-made for fleets that may have some increasingly demanding requests.

Government extends COVID-19 benefits and business supports

July 30, 2021 - Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance, the Honourable Chrystia Freeland, and the Honourable Carla Qualtrough, Minister of Employment, Workforce Development and Disability Inclusion, announced the extension of crucial COVID-19 support measures for Canadians and Canadian businesses in recognition that uneven economic reopening across regions and sectors means workers and businesses continue to need support. These extensions include:

  • Extending the eligibility period for the Canada Emergency Wage Subsidy, the Canada Emergency Rent Subsidy and Lockdown Support until October 23, 2021, and increasing the rate of support employers and organizations can receive during the period between August 29 and September 25, 2021.
  • Extending the Canada Recovery Benefit (CRB), the Canada Recovery Caregiving Benefit (CRCB), and the Canada Recovery Sickness Benefit (CRSB) until October 23, 2021.
  • Increasing the maximum number of weeks available for the CRB, by an additional 4 weeks, to a total of 54 weeks, at a rate of $300 per week, and ensuring it is available to those who have exhausted their employment insurance (EI) benefits.

Hutch Connect is Canada’s first certified ELD

Transport Canada has certified the first electronic logging device (ELD) to meet a related mandate for federally regulated carriers.  The Hutch Connect ELD passed the third-party certification tests conducted by FPInnovations – one of three certification bodies that can determine whether individual ELDs meet underlying technical standards.

While suppliers self-certify their devices in the U.S., the equipment must be certified by one of the named third-party labs in Canada. All certified devices will be listed on a web page managed by Transport Canada.

The third-party certification process was designed to help ensure Hours of Service data is not prone to tampering. Commercial Driver Technology and CSA Group are the other certifying bodies.

Prices for Moves on the Rise in the UK

UK’s The Guardian newspaper reports that moving prices have risen by up to 25% as some movers cover wage increases to attract staff amid post-Brexit driver shortage. Several operators of moving companies confirmed that they had been forced to increase wages to compete for qualified workers and put up prices for customers by 10% to 25%.
