CAM News & Updates
President's Message

CAM 1.png

As some of you know, I was in Edmonton three weeks ago, at the invitation of Edmonton Tourism, to scout for November 2020 convention and activity locations. It certainly was busy with 24 locations to tour in three jam-packed days. I am happy to say that we’ve come up with a great convention location in Edmonton and I came away with an arms-length of activities that could work for us. I must admit that I was pleasantly surprised with the downtown area. I hadn’t seen much of Edmonton since the 2005 Brier, so I really enjoyed how “hip” it’s become. I happened to attend two different events at the new Rogers Place – what a beautiful building. Wouldn’t I love to see CAM do one of our receptions in Studio 99 or at the Edmonton Oilers Hall of Fame? We’ll see if the budget can take it!

Besides touring hotel after hotel after hotel, I managed to get around to visit almost all of our Edmonton mover members. It was wonderful to meet so many folks and to tour many of the operations. Big or small, our movers are so eager to do things right! I had some interesting conversations around cutting corners, sloppy paperwork and, of course, rogues. I really appreciated those of you who were able to take time out of your day to chat with me. I’m looking forward to a much longer visit with you next year.

Speaking of conferences and meetings … I know you’re up to your eyeballs in alligators right now, but don’t forget to let us know that you are planning on attending this year’s golf day in September or our November conference in Blue Mountain, Ontario. You don’t have to pay right now – we can invoice you closer to the date. Marian and I are trying to get a handle on registrations. If you don’t have time to fill out a registration form at this time, just pop me a quick email and say that you are planning on coming. We’d love you to join us!

Early Bird draw – 3 weeks away!  Get registered now!

cam1.jpgWe’re three weeks away from our Early Bird draw for the free foursome at our golf day at Royal Niagara on Friday, September 13th. Last year, MoverOne won the draw and had four colleagues join them for a great day of free golf and camaraderie.

Will you win the Early Bird this year? The only way you can is to get your name in the draw!

Either get that registration form filled out and sent in or let us know right now that you are planning to golf and we’ll get the registration sorted out when you aren’t busy moving people. Don’t miss out on the opportunity to share in the fun!

IAM President Joins Slate of Presenters

We are thrilled to announce that Charles “Chuck” White, President of the International Association of Movers (IAM), will be joining our slate of presenters at the 24th Annual CAM Conference. Fresh off his own conference in October, which will feature a Global Moving and Mobility Standards Summit, Chuck will fill us in on international issues and trends as well as his thoughts on the Summit and the need for the global moving and mobility industry to drive the adoption and development of industry standards. Without industry standards, the global moving and mobility industry will be unable to adopt transformative technologies like interoperability and blockchain.

Chuck is an engaging speaker and well worth hearing. Why not join us in Blue Mountain, Ontario from November 17th – 19th? Get registered now to take advantage of early bird pricing.

Moving by numbers

We didn’t believe it until we saw our numbers! CAM has an online service where consumers can send some basic information about their upcoming move to CAM members who they select and ask them for information or a quote. We looked at the 27 online requests sent by consumers during the peak moving season, between June 4 and June 30. Six involved a local move and 21 were planning a long distance move.

What was so surprising to us was the short lead time consumers had to their planned moving date, especially among folks moving a long distance. For the local moves, moving day was an average of 23 days away. Half of the consumers were moving in just three weeks (the closest moving day was five days away and the farthest was 41 days out). For the long-distance moves, moving day was only an average of 35 days away. Very surprisingly, half planned to move in less than a month (in one case moving day was only two days away and the latest was 107 days out).

A long-distance move in two days? Movers are clearly having to manage some unrealistic consumer expectations during their busy moving season. So what happens when the responsible moving industry can’t meet those expectations? That’s when we see consumers shift to the rogue element that offers wild promises and impossible assurances that they have no intention to fulfill at very attractive low-ball rates. | | Media Kit
