CAM News & Updates
President's Message

I was talking to my daughter in China the other day. After 17 weeks with no physical school (she’s been teaching virtually for three months), her school was planning to start bringing grades 3-12 back into the building starting on May 11th. Her students are young (age 5), so, if the initial wave goes well, then her kids will be present in late June and throughout July and mid-August.

In the beginning of May, school officials were still trying to figure out how to do this safely, by not only bringing the students back, but also the throngs of administrative staff. There was an equal responsibility being put on the school’s administration and the parents to protect everyone involved. I won’t get into the details (although they are interesting), but I will say that the only way this will work for them is through strong communication between everyone involved.

With the sun shining and hoodies and sweatpants being swapped out for shorts and flip flops, Canadians are getting antsy about getting outside and getting things back to normal. We know through our own website metrics, that consumers are starting to look for moving information at an increasing rate. I know that my personal social media accounts have been messaged by friends and complete strangers looking for referrals and asking lots of questions. Perhaps this year, more than ever, with people being home and spending time on their computers, consumers as a whole will do more research and choose a mover who isn’t going to cause them grief.

We have heard lots of stories over the past two months of operations that indeed are causing a lot of stress on their unsuspecting customers, as scammers are finding new ways to get away with their vile activities. I discuss the weigh scale issue below in the COVID Chronicles as an example.

We have had a lot of inquiries to do with COVID-19 and the extent that movers will go to protect their customers. The virus is still in existence in Canada and still has a good chance of coming back with a vengeance if we don’t continue to be vigilant with our services. As with my daughter’s school, I think it’s important that you have honest conversations with your customers about your expectations on what they need to do to protect themselves and your crew.

We have had too many inquiries to count with questions regarding how many people can be in a house during a move; or will the movers wear masks and gloves throughout the move; and if they do wear masks (not many of our members are, from what I understand), why aren’t they changing them out for fresh ones each time they take them off during a break or to have a smoke? The list goes on and on. Most of the questions are related to the responsibility of the mover, with no expectation on the consumer’s side about their responsibility.

Let’s face it – it’s Spring and with the warm weather and the loosening of restrictions, people are going to be less mindful of handwashing, physical distancing and the other precautions that have been put in place to keep everyone safe. Keep your communication lines open and prepare your customers for this summer’s move by making sure they understand, more than ever, what is expected of them.

COVID-19 Chronicles

cam4apr232020.jpgNew Consumer Resources

CAM has put up some information for consumers on the COVID-19 info page as well has created a tip sheet on “How to Pack up Your House and Move Safely during Coronavirus”. Feel free to pass along these resources to your customers.

Weigh Scale Issues

With the close of some weigh scales, and others that are in operation but not providing paper slips, there has been an upsurge in shenanigans by less-than-scrupulous moving companies taking advantage of consumers.  We have had many calls from consumers about weights.  Some have had their bill increase dramatically because the mover has guessed at the weight and charged them based on their ‘experienced’ knowledge.  Others have received a “scale ticket” written on the moving company’s letterhead with only alleged before and after weights.  Customers have had some difficulties challenging the weight as these scammers are not abiding by the 110% rule or weighing regulations.

Make sure that you cover off how your company is managing weight verification if a scale is not available.

CAM’S New Website Up & Running!

The new and much improved is live! After eight months of writing language and code, reformatting, researching, and a lot of trial and error with new applications, we’ve launched our new website and are so proud of it.

We have learned over the past three years that 85% of our website traffic is done mostly by new users. In other words, consumers who come to our website to find certified professional movers as well valuable consumer information to help them have a smooth move, may not return again until their next move.

In October 2017, we initialized our social media platforms using the key phrasing “to find a trusted and reliable mover, go to” which has resonated with the public and resulted in a doubling of average traffic to our site to close to 5,000 a month. All the more reason to make our website customer-facing. As well, we’ve been able to develop the French side of the website with more information available en français than ever before.

Besides the “look”, we’ve added some neat features, and modernized others, to make the browsing experience not only informative, but fun.

  • Searching for a mover has never been easier! On the home page (and many locations throughout the website) people just have to enter a city and province name or a postal code in the location search bar and select from the options provided in the drop-down menu below – and the movers closest to that location are populated into the results. Want some fun? Type in St John’s NL. Once the search has occurred and you see the listings, type in Comox BC in the search bar, hit select and watch the map. Pretty neat, eh?! We are working on a zoom in/out bar on this application, but for now you can use the roller button on your mouse to do that function.

  • Validating a CAM member in our Member Directory is easy! Just enter a few letters of the company’s name and a list will appear below the search box. Click on the mover you want to check out and, if multiple movers are listed under that name, the choices will be shown. Click on their name and further member information will show. (We will be adding more information in the future.)

  • Our International mover section is still a work in progress – but it’s an attractive page with country flags of all of our international members.

We wanted to make sure that we had the website up and running during May is Moving Month. If you are a regular user of our site, you will notice a few components are not available (or are in transition) at this time. Most notably are the Member Log-in and the Canadian Professional Mover course as well as our training videos. Be patient! We are still working out bugs that will allow us to add the learning and “members only” functions.

This has been a massive project with over 400 pages to review, so we are certain to have missed something. Please search for your company’s information and let us know if you are seeing broken links, misinformation or, in rare circumstances, no information. Simply email us with your investigative results (include the url link please) and we’ll get it fixed.

USA Global Household Goods Contract Awarded

For those of you who attended CAM’s annual conference last November, you will recall International Association of Movers President Chuck White giving us the details on the Global Household Goods Contract (or GHC). Under GHC, a single commercial move manager will be appointed to oversee activities that relate to the domestic and international movement and storage-in-transit of household goods.

The GHC contract was awarded on April 30th to American Roll-On Roll-Off Carrier Group, Inc. ARC was selected for the new multiyear award contract by the United States Transportation Command (TRANSCOM) to provide global relocation services for the Department of Defense (DoD) and U.S. Coast Guard. The major subcontracting partners of Team ARC include UniGroup, Atlas World Group, Suddath, The Pasha Group and Deloitte.

It’s Two for Tuesday!

It’s kind of ironic to be having “Tips for the road” when you may be stuck at home working, but we thought these were two great blogs that needed to be shared.

Megann Willson, of Panoptika, who spoke at our conference last year, shared this witty advice on 5 Productivity Hacks for Working from Home. If you saw Megann, you know that she speaks from the heart and is completely relatable. Be realistic about what you can achieve. Read more
