Technology Adoption in the Trades

The days of managing a job site or service department with a pen and paper gone. To ensure productivity, and optimize project outcomes, firms must embrace the new digital tools of the trade. That includes construction management software that can manage the complexities of modern project and keep everyone on the same page.

Please read this insightful article by Matt Bradford who suggests some approaches to this issue.

Council of Canadian Construction Associations(COCA) Chair’s Award

DCN News Services February 21, 2018

We are proud to announce that our very own Dan Lancia, Holaco Installations from Hamilton has been awarded the 2017 COCA Chair’s Award. Rightfully deserved, Dan has dedicated his time over the years in lobbying for prompt payment. He has attended numerous lobby days and participated in events to urge the government to introduce the new Construction Lien Amendment Act, which received Royal Assent in Ontario on December 2017. As a long established electrical contractor based in Hamilton, he knows first-hand how lack of prompt payment to sub-contractors affects owners and their employees. Besides being part of COCA he also has been active with Prompt Payment Ontario and has made presentations representing the electrical contractor industry before the Federal and Provincial government committees in support of prompt payment in the construction industry.

New Ontario Apprenticeship Strategy Released
COCA February Newsletter

The Ministry of Advanced Education and Skills Development (MAEDS) released the province’s apprenticeship strategy titled “A Stronger Apprenticeship System for Ontario” on February 7, 2018.

The strategy is a multi-year plan built on five “essential pillars and future state goals” each one with a suite of short and long tern initiatives. These pillars are:

  • Promote Apprenticeship
  • Support and retain apprentices
  • Engage and support employers and sponsors
  • Increase participation of underrepresented groups
  • Update the apprenticeship system through digital enhancement

Various partnership initiatives between MAEDS and the Ontario College of Trades(OCoT) are identified several times in the strategy. This could signal a new era of high cooperation between OCoT and MAESD. The strategy is aligned in many ways with OCoT’s recently released 2018 business plan which should result in a de-emphasis on its function as an enforcer and more on its apprenticeship promotion and program research and development role.

General Contractors Alliance of Canada holds founding meeting

DCN News Services February 21, 2018

The GCAC, a national general contractors organization, has been formed to support and contribute to the federal government’s consultation process for national prompt payment legislation, a statement said.

The founding meeting was hosted by the Ontario General Contractors Association (OGCA) on February 21 in Toronto.

The alliance includes general contractors from across the country who will work to ensure the review and legislation support the needs of general contractors and the entire industry.

The process will be led by Bruce Reynolds and Sharon Vogel, who were instrumental in the creation of Bill 142, the Construction Lien Amendment Act, 2017, which was approved in Ontario in December. Reynolds and Vogel are likely to recommend a process for federal projects that is complementary and will likely be similar to Ontario, states the release.

The review confirms the end of the Senate Prompt Payment Bill 224, the release indicates, adding the OGCA has objected to the bill as being “biased” and “not workable.”
