CAM News & Updates
President's Message

As I write this, I am sitting in the Amtrak lounge patiently waiting for my train back home after five days at the International Association of Movers (IAM) Annual Conference in Chicago. I gotta tell you – I’m tired. Exhausted, really. I go flat out at these meetings (as anyone who travels with me can attest), but with IAM, you can’t help but end up in overload.

Two thousand participants, more languages and customs than you can count, and an array of services providing a cornucopia of world opportunities, with just a click of an email away. For the seasoned IAM Conference attendee, it’s highly manageable, as they book daily meetings (sometimes dozens of 10-minute slots) with the goal of targeting their networking to specific areas or countries. For the novice (me), I did not book meetings ahead of time. However, once there, I did get in a lot of meetings – many introductory – with the hope of getting CAM, and the opportunity to promote Canadian members, out there. I had informative meetings with lots of suppliers and many individual worldwide moving companies and several relocation associations, including the Asian Relocation Association (ARA), Pan American International Movers Association (PAIMA) and the FIDI Global Alliance.

Of course, AMSA, IAM and several members of the National Council of Moving Associations (NCMA) were present and I never miss an opportunity to get meaningful conversation in with each of those associations as we work together to help each other out with efficiencies, ideas, and a heads-up on the latest news and trends in the business.

I’m not going to tell you any more about the international scene, as IAM President Chuck White (along with IAM VP Brian Limperopulos) will be filling in attendees in November at the CAM Conference on the status of global moving and the buzz around worldwide standards. Having attended those sessions, I must tell you that it is an exciting – and complicated – endeavour that IAM is striving for. If you do international shipping, I encourage you to attend Tuesday morning at the meeting in Blue Mountain to hear all about it.

Networking and knowing your partners ... two very important pieces to having a successful business.

Learning and Connecting

We’re only 32 days away from the conference! Register today and take advantage of the opportunity to learn and, more importantly, to connect with fellow CAM members and suppliers.

We’re providing you with engaging speakers and topics that are relevant to today’s business and will keep you ahead of the curve!

Megann Willson will be joining us to provide practical advice on how to manage your online reputation and on how, and when, to react to negative reviews and comments.

Miki Ho is going to ask you if you can afford the risk with your cybersecurity. CAM is in the midst of tightening up its online presence and thinks you should too. Miki will be on hand to discuss just how extensive data breaches are and how you can protect yourself.

Arguably, drivers are the most important part of our business. Without them, customers are not going to get their things on time or necessarily in good shape. But driver attentiveness is on the wane, putting themselves, and your customers’ shipments, in danger. Dave Earle believes that changing driver behaviour starts at the top and is going to discuss with us the importance of management and operations folks helping their drivers, and other employees, to understand and alter their current habits to provide safe and efficient performance.

Straight from the International Association of Movers conference in Chicago, IAM President and Vice President Chuck White and Brian Limperopulos are going to update us on the world moving industry and the results from the first Global Moving and Mobility Standards Summit, which they will be hosting in October.

And there will be plenty of opportunity for us to openly and freely discuss the status of the Canadian moving industry. Results from UBC student Asrai Ord’s study of trust and efficiency in the Canadian market will be shared. We’re hoping that her results will serve as a jumping off point for more industry-based discussions and problem-solving on what the future may look like for today’s moving companies.

And, finally, back by popular demand, we will be hosting a discussion with several of our industry’s top van line and independent movers’ executives on a variety of current topics that are of interest to our membership. Do you have something you’d like them to discuss? Contact CAM with the topic(s).
