CAM News & Updates
President's Message

I know what I’m doing this winter. I’m planning on going back to school!

CAM is proud of it's Canadian Professional Mover (CPM) course. The course is based on the very successful Moving Consultant Orientation Course that was the standard for Canadian movers in the early 1990s. At one point in time, it was housed through Dalhousie University; however, it now resides on our website and has been updated several times.
Moving professionals who complete the CPM Course will understand the moving consultant's role and the services provided by movers in Canada.

The Canadian Professional Mover Course consists of nine lessons:

  • Estimating Procedures
  • Long Distance Moving – Canada (2 lessons)
  • Long Distance Moving – Canada/USA/Mexico
  • Local Moving
  • Permanent Storage (3 lessons)
  • Office Moving

Each lesson contains the reading material required for the area of study, as well as the assignments that ensure that the material has been learned. This course is free to the students as long as their companies are active CAM members, and they can work on the lessons at their own pace. Students typically take about two months to complete the course although it can be completed on a weekend.

Graduates of the course will receive a certificate and may use CAM’s Canadian Professional Mover designation “CPM” and/or the CPM logo on their business cards. Graduates are also posted on CAM’s website.

We’re now into a slow period at many of your companies. It might be a great time to have your staff polish off this course. The CPM designation is just one more thing that the rogues – and your non-CAM member competitors – don’t have.

A CAM member company may register any number of its employees for the course (at NO additional cost). Each employee must be registered individually for the course in order to receive their own personal user name and password. Give us a call or check out the education section of our website.

Winter is coming. Have you GOT your CPM designation yet?

Learning and Connecting

We’re only 5 days away from the conference! Register today and take advantage of the opportunity to learn and, more importantly, to connect with fellow CAM members and suppliers.

We’re providing you with engaging speakers and topics that are relevant to today’s business and will keep you ahead of the curve!

Megann Willson will be joining us to provide practical advice on how to manage your online reputation and on how, and when, to react to negative reviews and comments.

Miki Ho is going to ask you if you can afford the risk with your cybersecurity. CAM is in the midst of tightening up its online presence and thinks you should too. Miki will be on hand to discuss just how extensive data breaches are and how you can protect yourself.

Arguably, drivers are the most important part of our business. Without them, customers are not going to get their things on time or necessarily in good shape. But driver attentiveness is on the wane, putting themselves, and your customers’ shipments, in danger. Dave Earle believes that changing driver behaviour starts at the top and is going to discuss with us the importance of management and operations folks helping their drivers, and other employees, to understand and alter their current habits to provide safe and efficient performance.

Straight from the International Association of Movers conference in Chicago, IAM President and Vice President Chuck White and Brian Limperopulos are going to update us on the world moving industry and the results from the first Global Moving and Mobility Standards Summit, which they will be hosting in October.

And there will be plenty of opportunities for us to openly and freely discuss the status of the Canadian moving industry. Results from UBC student Asrai Ord’s study of trust and efficiency in the Canadian market will be shared. We’re hoping that her results will serve as a jumping-off point for more industry-based discussions and problem-solving on what the future may look like for today’s moving companies.  Your voice will be heard as we’ll be participating in small group roundtable chats.

cameng2bnov122019.pngNeed a laugh?  We have fun too!  Monday night’s Lounge and Laugh, hosted by Ogilvy Insurance will feature Canadian Rob Pue, a gregarious and dynamic comedian with a knack for telling it like it is. Rob has become one of the brightest voices to hit the Canadian comedy scene and is a regular at Just For Laughs Montreal, Ha! Halifax Comedy Fest and The Winnipeg Comedy Festival.  Watch Rob's stand-up here.

It's not too late to REGISTER!

Thank you, Sponsors!

We sincerely mean it when we say we couldn’t do it without you.  We are so lucky to have such great friends – who really make a difference to our Association and our industry!

In the news

On October 29th, CAM Director Josh Schwartz of Meldrum the Mover was invited to comment on a move of a piano that had gone terribly wrong. The Radio Canada piece garnered lots of interest from Quebecers to contact CAM to find a trusted and reliable mover. Besides being an interesting story on the worldwide journey of this piano since 1929, Josh did a great job! Click here to watch the story.

Chicago-based Verna Magazine ran an excellent information piece on Organizing a Move for the New Year.

Do you know a fumigation company?

CAM’s International Committee is looking for brown marmorated stink bug (BMSB) fumigators.

Do you know of any fumigation company in your area that uses Methyl Bromide in their fumigation process? If yes, can you please send their contact information to us?

We want to encourage them to apply to the New Zealand and Australia authorities to become an approved vendor. We need to have more companies approved for containers to New Zealand and Australia, as we only have four companies in Canada authorized at the moment. Containers with vehicles will get rejected entry unless they were fumigated prior to the arrival of the vessel.

New membership fee in 2020

CAM has been able to keep its fees at the current levels since 2016.  However, on October 11, 2019, CAM’s Board of Directors approved a modest increase to the membership fee for Movers.  Membership fees for Movers will increase by $25 per annum while the fees for Suppliers, Internationals and Van Lines will remain unchanged. There will also be a small increase in the rate for branches of Movers for companies with multiple (more than five) locations. These changes will take effect for memberships that commence in January 2020..
