President's Message

The biggest change for many of the folks in our fine industry in the past few months has been going virtual and relying on it to successfully complete a day’s work. The moving business has been talking about video surveying and virtual services for years, and a lot of our members got ahead of the curve by subscribing to online activity long before it became a necessity because of a worldwide pandemic.

Speaking with many of you since March, it seems going virtual was an easier transition than you expected.

With the challenge of going to do in-home surveys during the lockdown, some of you, who weren’t using video software, did workaround solutions to get your job done – using “back in the old days” concepts from not even a decade ago of Facetime and writing things down by hand, then converting them to find your weight. Others of you, who were used to being in the office or working from your car, had to learn how to be efficient working virtually from home, despite the multitude of distractions that can have.

But almost three months in now, we have become masters of things that once made us nervous to try. Necessity did that. And who knows if you’ll get back to how you conducted business in February again.

In light that we no longer publish our magazine The Canadian Mover, we thought this would be a great time to showcase going virtual. You will see below a recent essay on video surveying followed by a supplier showcase of some of our CAM suppliers who provide these and other virtual services.

As well, I recently reached out to a couple of prominent doctors in our country – Dr. Theresa Tam and Dr. Abdu Sharkawy - to get their take on the ongoing debate amongst our members about wearing masks while conducting moves. You’ll see their comments below.

As we ramp up for a different type of peak season, I wish you health, safety and success.

Feature – Making your company CRISIS proof – Digital surveys

Our Dutch friends at TriGlobal took an impartial look in late November at converting to video surveying. How long ago that seems now. Now three months into a worldwide pandemic, TriGlobal updated their article to the one below. With their kind permission, here’s a short blog on some of the reasons to consider this emerging field in your future business plan.

Originally published on November 28 2019 (revised May 29 2020) by Ellena Branke, Business Development, TriGlobal

The year 2020 has shown us that a worldwide crisis can always be waiting just around the corner. There exists no blueprint on how to deal with such unexpected events. The moving industry has been hit hard by this crisis, from closed borders, cancelled moves, to distancing rules and even changed consumer behaviour. Making sure that your company is built on a strong yet adaptable foundation has never been more important than during recent months. Your adaptability and creativity could make the difference between succeeding or struggling greatly in turbulent times.

Switching your service from a purely offline approach to a more online-focused strategy is one crucial factor in this adaption. “Survival of the fittest” is the topic that comes to mind. You need clever solutions to overcome obstacles in your everyday business and act smarter than you did yesterday.

Virtual Moving Technologies

virtualmt-cam-june92020.jpgFounded in 2015 by movers for movers, Virtual Moving Technologies (VMT) offers the most affordable, accurate and easy to use virtual surveys in North America.

CAM Members who are incorporating a virtual estimation option into their business in order to accommodate the incredible increase in customer demand for this option due to the COVID-19 pandemic should know that it’s actually really easy to do, and VMT is here to help.

VMT supports both the option for your sales staff to conduct virtual surveys themselves using VMT’s software, as well as an option for you to outsource surveys as needed to VMT’s staff of industry experts, who complete a recorded survey on your company’s behalf, and return a cube sheet back to you the next business day.

In conversation with VMT’s CEO, Tom Tama The Mover’s Edge learned, “The intention from the company’s founding has always been to provide a service that enhances a mover’s existing sales process, so that both the mover and the customer benefit. Having run a moving company for most of my career, I know firsthand the fine balance between winning the job and making sure that there is both a profit from that job and a happy customer in the end”.

For a limited time, VMT is still offering unlimited surveys conducted by your staff using their platform for $175/month, and outsourced surveys are just $75 each. Call (518) 378-9641 or email to get started.

COVID-19 Update

Small Business Accounting Assistance

Prime Minister Trudeau announced on May 25th that the Federal Government has teamed up with the Canadian Chamber of Commerce to provide accounting and financial advising services to small businesses.  If you'd like to talk to someone to get assistance understanding and managing this year's tax filing changes, or financial restructuring, amongst other things, contact 1-866-989-1080.

To Mask or not to Mask?  That is the question (for now).

camcovidupdate-june92020.pngDue to some concerns raised about the ability/desire to wear non-medical masks during the hot moving season, Nancy wrote to two top Canadian physicians, Dr. Theresa Tam (Chief Medical Officer for Canada) and Dr. Abdu Sharkawy (Infections Diseases Specialist, Toronto Western Hospital). Below are excerpts from the correspondence we received back from Dr. Sharkawy and the Public Health Agency of Canada on behalf of Dr. Tam.

[Note: Minister Marc Garneau announced on June 3 that a set of practices will soon be established for the use of personal protective equipment, including face coverings, in order to protect truck drivers and their passengers. These practices have not been established yet. CAM has reached out to Transport Canada to offer to be consulted with and to try and gain clarification on moving crew’s requirements.]

From Dr. Abdu Sharkawy, May 21, 2020

“PPE can be safely worn for labour intensive work and is done routinely by some construction workers, and front line health care workers too! Your workers are entitled to proper protective supplies to keep themselves and their customers safe!”

From the Public Health Agency of Canada, May 29, 2020

“COVID-19 is a serious health threat. The risk will vary between and within communities, but given the increasing number of cases in Canada, the risk to Canadians is considered high.

The Public Health Agency of Canada has developed guidance for ‘Non-medical masks and face covers’ which can be accessed here.

If used correctly, a non-medical mask can play an important role in situations where physical distancing is not possible or is unpredictable. Given that the science tells us it’s possible to spread the virus before, during and even without having any symptoms, wearing a non-medical mask is an additional measure that can protect others around you. Our current guidance is that a non-medical mask or cloth face covering is recommended, particularly in crowded settings, where physical distancing is not possible.

To prevent transmission of COVID-19 our best defence is to wash hands frequently, stay at home and away from others if you are sick or have been in contact with someone with the virus, covering coughs and sneezes and disinfecting surfaces.
It is critical that these measures continue, even as we shift through next phases of this pandemic and slowly start resuming daily activities.”

Mask usage in the US – Government Moves

The US Department of Defence is suspending movers immediately for not wearing PPE. For example, for Air Force moves, the mask must be worn at all times within 10 feet of the home. That means that the crew must wear masks the entire time and, more importantly, the DOD is checking to make sure that masks are being worn while loading/unloading the truck (i.e. INSIDE the truck). Penalties are swift and immediate and inspectors issued 30 suspensions in the first week.

A special note from our Golf Day Presenting Sponsor Hansen’s

Leif Hansen founded L Hansen’s Forwarding Ltd in 1980, armed only with a strong work ethic and the idea to give movers a viable alternative for shipping vehicles. In those days, loading vehicles alongside household goods on a trailer was a necessity, not an option. Leif had no equipment or staff, and from those humble beginnings, he facilitated transport for approximately 1,000 vehicles that first year.

Fast forward to 2020, and Hansen’s is now a national carrier with 450 employees, 300+ trucks, seven branches, and the capacity to transport well over 700,000 vehicles annually throughout North America. Industries served include movers, vehicle manufacturers, dealers, leasing companies, the federal government, “snowbirds”, and private individuals.

The company motto – “On Time, Damage Free, Respect” permeates the organization from top to bottom, and provides the guiding principles for employees to follow as they discharge their daily duties.

Hansen’s move management system sets the standard for the industry and is complimented by its popular online customer portal, which allows clients 24/7 access to a suite of transportation options. This transparency is essential to us and our customers alike, and is one of the reasons why Hansen’s is celebrating 40 years of transportation excellence this year.
