CAM News & Updates
President's Message

CAM 1.png

You are now full into moving season and, again, I wish you all the best for a smooth summer of moves.

We are hearing from customers that some moving companies are applying a deductible to the 60 cents per pound option for moving protection. Of course, that is contrary to current provincial regulations that respectable movers are following. Just another thing for your sales folks to discuss with their potential clients when reviewing quotes.

The other issue concerning valuation that we have been getting a number of calls from consumers about is that the mover who they have initially contacted for a quote is not willing or able to provide any coverage beyond the legal minimum of $0.60 per pound. Again, we see this as a great opportunity for our members to not only educate their customer about what they should expect from their mover but also to provide the value-added services that CAM members have at their disposal.

When we get one of these calls, it is easy for us to refer the customer to our members and hopefully generate a new sale for you!

If you do not have a valuation protection explanation for your customers, feel free to share this link on Frequently Asked Questions on our website. You’ll find other frequently asked customer questions there as well. It seems that moving protection was hard enough to explain before these couple of new wrinkles. Please let us know if there is anything we can assist with.

Heat Exhaustion Reminder

cam2July232019.jpgIt’s hot. It’s humid. The job is manual. There’s not a lot of rest. The perfect conditions for heat exhaustion.

There are two types of heat exhaustion:

  1. Water depletion. Signs include excessive thirst, weakness, headache and loss of consciousness.
  2. Salt depletion. Signs include nausea and vomiting, muscle cramps and dizziness.

If any of your crew has symptoms of heat exhaustion, it's essential to immediately get them out of the heat and rest, preferably in an air-conditioned room. If you can't them get inside, try to find the nearest cool and shady place and have them remove any tight or unnecessary clothing and drink plenty of fluid (avoid caffeine, alcohol and energy drinks). If you have the opportunity, apply other cooling measures such as fans or ice towels.

If such measures fail to provide relief within 15 minutes, seek emergency medical help because untreated heat exhaustion can progress to heatstroke. Click here for more information on heat exhaustion.

It is important that you explain to your customer what is going on – they may be able to assist with comfort and care, rather than call CAM later to complain that your crew is sitting around or taking forever to complete their move.

As Sgt. Phil Esterhaus used to say on Hill Street Blues ... “Let’s be careful out there!”

Early Bird draw – 1 week away! Get registered now!

You may have seen the reminder that the Early Bird contest for the golf day on Friday, September 13th is coming to a close on July 31st. We’ve heard from many of you about registrations (especially from out West) over the past couple of weeks and we’re excited about our “first time in a long time golfers” joining us this year. If you know you’re golfing, why not get registered and have a chance to win an additional foursome?

Nancy visited Royal Niagara last week and confirmed that some of the crazy stuff we have planned is a go-ahead. We’re going to have so much fun celebrating Friday the 13th! She’s also working on a plan to provide shuttle service from CAM supplier Motel 6 for anyone who wants to stay overnight and enjoy some adult beverages.

If you’re planning to stay in a hotel, consider booking with a CAM Supplier Member - Niagara Fall’s Motel 6 (about an 11 minute drive from the course). We’re arranging a free shuttle to and from the golf course from Motel 6, so you won’t have to worry about driving. Here’s the link to book. Contact us for our member code.

Here are a few other lodging options in the area - but book early, since September is their busy season.

We’re in heavy planning mode for golf and our sponsors are excited about the opportunities— please join in the fun, unless you’re afraid of a bit of superstition!

CAM Conference Update – Driven to Distraction

It’s time for a change in driving culture and that starts at the top. Distracted driving is a major threat to road safety. It’s a very difficult and dangerous habit to control, and often with deadly consequences. Texting and driving, careless seatbelt use, sleep deprivation, a general lack of concentration and ignorance of the basic “rules of the road,” round out many of the broader problems.

Dave Earle, President & CEO of the BC Trucking Association, is passionate about road safety.

“Impairment caused by substance use and distracted driving are symptoms of the same root problem, ” says Earle. “Many drivers do not recognize the actual risk these behaviours present as the task of driving is perceived to be common, routine and mundane. Until we redefine the occupation and illustrate the actual risks these behaviours present, we will be faced with communicating a message that does not rationally resonate to an audience that are not willing to listen.”

Come to this year’s conference in Blue Mountain from November 17th – 19th, and join Dave who will lead a thought-provoking session for operations and management on helping drivers understand and alter their current driving habits.
