Safeguarding vital building systems during floods
building systems.jpg
Even after Calgary's most damaging flood, the majority of facilities continue to maintain an “out of sight, out of mind” mentality, rather than be proactive and prepare for what could happen next. Yet in many cases of erratic weather events, facilities can't function because essential equipment is placed in unprotected basements, sub-basements or ground floor levels that have flooded. In some cases, components of vital systems are well elevated, while other elements such as boilers, fire suppression systems, transformers, transfer switches, fuel tanks and are placed at lower levels, leaving them susceptible to flooding and rendering the systems inoperative.
