Chairman’s Message

As I write this on March 23rd, my entire world is changing without my permission.

All of our member companies, even though we all fly the ‘Canadian Association of Movers’ banner, are as diverse as the many regions of this great country that we are based in. What we do have in common is a commitment that runs deep inside to the communities and the people we serve everywhere in Canada. Managing through COVID-19 means addressing fiscal, operational and social concerns all at the same time. I believe I can say that none of us have ever faced such a monumental challenge in our lifetimes.

How we as business and community leaders deal with the immediate impact of this unprecedented event will ultimately determine how we emerge, through “trust, not confrontation”, with “clear communication and cooperation”, as the risk eventually diminishes and we settle in to the new normal. The one thing we can control is the message to our employees and contractors that the demand for our/their services will return (with a vengeance), and we need to prepare ourselves. Our response today will dictate our readiness “tomorrow”, recognizing that our most important resource, the HUMAN element, is looking to our leadership for confidence and positive signs outlining our commitment to their well-being. I encourage everyone to access any and all available programs.

President’s Message

What can I say? Whatever I do mention here (based on my March 24th writing date), it’s outdated by the time that this newsletter gets published. Last night, both Quebec and Ontario deemed moving services as essential, while at the same time the United Kingdom stopped all relocation services. It’s head-spinning trying to keep track of developments as they’re happening concurrently at all hours of the day and night.

With the news coming fast and furious, it is impossible for us to email everyone every time something comes up. I can’t reiterate enough for you to check with our website COVID page

It is important to pay attention to what is happening in the moving industry in the USA and around the world. However, I caution our Canadian members, that our system and our aid packages are different, so don’t presume that what is happening elsewhere will occur here.

Two weeks ago, when the effects of COVID-19 were starting to take shape in Canada, it was whirlwind and overwhelming for all of us. I’m glad that all of you took a deep breath and got as much information as you needed to start making choices that are best for your operation. We have some business information on the website that you may find useful as we go forward into this unknown immediate future.

I can’t thank all of you enough for sharing your experiences. Crowdsourcing is definitely helping us keep you folks up to date on what is happening in our industry.

Since moving has been declared an essential service, it is absolutely critical that you take this responsibility seriously. It doesn’t take much for a lapse of hygiene or protocol to have this virus spread. Be vigilant and impress this upon your coworkers and customers. The consequences to your business could be severe if one of your staff gets the virus.

Be wise in your choices – both at work and at home.

We can have positive impact during this crisis. Rise above and stay strong.

In Memoriam – Mike Ham

Sad to hear of the passing of Mike Ham, VP of CAM member Omnitracs at the age of 62.  A memorial mass and celebration of life will be scheduled at a later date because of social distancing measures established during the COVID-19 pandemic. But friends and family are asked to participate in a “Cheers to Mike Ham” moment that will be shared through social media.  Simply take a photo of yourself raising a glass to Mike and upload it to Twitter using the hashtag #CheerstoMikeHam and tagging @ontruck .

His family will also help to raise funds for cancer research at Princess Margaret Hospital, through the Northern Pass Bike Ride, which Ham had participated in.  Cheers to you Mike!

Your CAM membership – staying connected

CAM is committed to helping safeguard everyone’s health and safety at this extraordinary time.  We are all dealing with an unusual situation while trying to keep our businesses afloat and our employees and customers safe.  We want to help you, our CAM members.  Effective immediately, for any memberships renewing in the next 90 days (April, May, June), we won’t require you to pay until July.  We’ll continue to promote your company during this time.  And you can help us too by paying for your renewal by credit card, in light of the reduced postal service.  We’re in this together…stay safe.

Managing your company cash flow during this trying time

This is not going to be an easy situation to get through. By now, you’ve had to already make some tough decisions. Our friends at Deloitte have forwarded us this article with tips on how to manage cash flow during a crisis. While it may not all affect you, there certainly is some great information to consider as we plan for the next six months of viability.

We also recommend that you check locally to see if there are any potential opportunities in other transportation segments that are short of capacity and take advantage of any government financial assistance programs you may qualify for.
