CAM News & Updates
President's Message

CAM 1.png

A large contingent of Canadians are either already in the Windy City or are heading there this week for the annual PAIMA and International Association of Movers (IAM) meetings. I will be heading out to Chicago on Thursday and heading straight into the Global Moving and Mobility Standards Summit later that day.

I am very honoured to have been invited to this Summit. It is being organized by IAM with the purpose of gathering key stakeholders from the global moving and mobility industry to drive the adoption and development of industry standards. It is hoped that through active dialogue and collaboration with other critical experts and stakeholders at the Summit, CAM will contribute to the creation of a standardized future where software systems can talk together, customers can readily access real-time information on their smartphones, and all industry stakeholders will have greater visibility into their shipments.

Without industry standards, the global moving and mobility industry will be unable to achieve transformative technologies like interoperability and blockchain. If you’ll recall, we had a bit of a teaser on blockchain at our 2017 Montreal Conference from both Mark Oakeshott and Doug Robinson of IBM.

Of course, I will be furiously taking notes (like I always do) and reporting back to, not only CAM’s International Committee, but also to the membership as a whole. But even more exciting for us, will be the personal report given by IAM VP Brian Limperopulos and IAM President Chuck White at our CAM conference in Blue Mountain on Tuesday, November 19th.

Do consider attending this year’s CAM conference. We have taken great care to provide sessions that will matter to you, your company, your employees and coworkers. The great room rate of $179 for your suite is good until the end of this month. Registration instructions are in this link and also found below.

CAM Annual Conference – Sunday-Tuesday, November 17-19, 2019

With only 47 days until the conference, it’s full steam ahead with conference planning!

We believe that we are providing you with engaging speakers and topics that are relevant to today’s business and will keep you ahead of the curve!

Megann Willson will be joining us to provide practical advice on how to manage your online reputation and on how, and when, to react to negative reviews and comments.

Miki Ho is going to ask you if you can afford the risk with your cybersecurity. CAM is in the midst of tightening up its online presence and thinks you should too. Miki will be on hand to discuss just how extensive data breaches are and how you can protect yourself.

Arguably, drivers are the most important part of our business. Without them, customers are not going to get their things on time or necessarily in good shape. But driver attentiveness is on the wane, putting themselves, and your customers’ shipments, in danger. Dave Earle believes that changing driver behaviour starts at the top and is going to discuss with us the importance of management and operations folks helping their drivers, and other employees, to understand and alter their current habits to provide safe and efficient performance.

Straight from the International Association of Movers conference in Chicago, IAM President and Vice President Chuck White and Brian Limperopolous are going to update us on the world moving industry and the results from the first Global Moving and Mobility Standards Summit, which they will be hosting in October.

And there will be plenty of opportunity for us to openly and freely discuss the status of the Canadian moving industry. Results from UBC student Asrai Ord’s study of trust and efficiency in the Canadian market will be shared. We’re hoping that her results will serve as a jumping off point for more industry-based discussions and problem-solving on what the future may look like for today’s moving companies.

And, finally, back by popular demand, we will be hosting a discussion with several of our industry’s top van line and independent movers’ executives on a variety of current topics that are of interest to our membership. Do you have something you’d like them to discuss? Contact CAM with the topic(s).

Register Now!

We hope you will strongly consider coming to the conference and taking advantage of the opportunity to learn and, more importantly, to connect with fellow CAM members and suppliers.

Exhibitors - Do you have your booth booked yet?

We’d love to have you participate in our trade show this year. We have a lovely, large exhibit area at the Westin. Pricing remains the same as 2017. Please click here for the registration form.

A professor at George Brown College, Frank’s company is developing stair-climbing robots and just completed their first successful test of carrying 500 lbs!

We are also featuring an updated article on the ins and outs of vehicle transportation and an homage to CAMs 50th anniversary by revisiting CAMs most recent history and a retrospective message that assures that we are better together.

Most importantly, the 2019 CAM Conference information and registration form are in the magazine (and also inside the poly bag the magazine came in – so open it up!). A lot of work has gone into providing you with a superb conference, so make sure you read up on it and consider registering!

On a serious note, we never take the time to publicly thank our advertisers for supporting our magazine. Without them, we’d never be able to provide you with insightful articles that advance our industry. Make sure when you’re leafing through, to take notice of them. Better yet … get in touch with them – we’re sure they’d love to chat!
