President's Message

CAM-March5-image1.jpg

I was writing some social media posts this past week to stack up our queue on our Hootsuite planner. Anyone who manages their company’s social media accounts knows just how time-consuming a task it is. Finding new and different ways to say the same things all the time can test even the best media planner. I was pretty happy this month though … “spring ahead” time change, St. Patrick’s Day, and the first day of Spring are all posts I’ve been setting up. All very positive non-winter content.

But it got me thinking … it’s go time for preparing for busy season. In CAMs case, we’re in the middle of ours because it’s basically a three-month period between February and April where we organize the next golf tournament and the annual conference, as well as prepare for our BBB-partnered “May is Moving Month” awareness campaign.

Suppliers are busy right now as well. I’ve been talking to several and they are getting their warehouses stocked up with supplies for their clients, so they have enough uniforms, cardboard boxes, packing supplies, floor runners, and the list goes on.

Are you prepared? The International Association of Mover’s newsletter came out recently and there was an interesting article on being prepared for peak season by getting those staff hired, trained, and ready for, what my moving company used to refer to as, “silly season”. You’ll see more about training below.

Our phones have already started ringing as consumers are calling to find trusted and reliable movers to help them this year. As a result, we’re getting a lot of opportunities to send referrals your way. Let’s all make the most of this hopeful time of year!

CAM training assistance

Here’s a reminder that CAM has several free resources to help members train new staff for the peak season:

We’ve recently discovered that the videos are in a format that may not work on the most up-to-date computer systems. We’re working on getting them reformatted but, unfortunately, new versions won’t be ready for this summer. Hopefully, most of you can view them as is.

We also have the Canadian Professional Movers Course (available in English only) which is a free course offered to any employee of a CAM Member. Students typically take about two months to complete the course although it can be completed in a weekend. A recent graduate in January – a 20-year Relocation Consultant – found the course to be “a great refresher” in which they “also learned some new and valuable information.” We’ve had hundreds of graduates who now proudly use the CPM designation on their business cards.

Please contact the national office if you want more information.

Conference and hotel registration now open!

Yes, it’s a little ways off, but registration is now open for the 24th Annual Conference and Trade Show at the Westin Trillium House & Village in Blue Mountain, Ontario. Due to the generosity of our sponsors, we are able to keep the registration fees at the 2017 conference price and, back by popular demand, the Early Bird is available. The Hotel is also accepting reservations now, so why not get it out of the way before summer hits?

You can find the latest conference info, as well as registration links, here.

As we mentioned in the last issue of Mover’s Edge, there are plenty of sponsorship opportunities available for our 2019 conference. We encourage you to have a look at this year’s package. To add to the fun, many sponsors have added a ‘combo’ to their sponsorship. What’s that?  You’ll have to look at the 2019 package to find out.

April 7th – Green Shirt Day for Organ Donation

CAMEN4_03132019.pngOn April 6, 2018, Canadians were heartbroken to hear the news of the Humboldt Broncos bus crash. Of the 29 passengers, 16 lost their lives and 13 will all bear physical and emotional scars for life. The next day, defenceman Logan Boulet succumbed to his injuries. Because Logan had told his parents he was an organ donor, they offered to donate his organs so that six lives could live on.

News spread of this organ donation and over 100,000 people registered to become organ donors in the days and weeks that followed. To date this is the largest number of Canadians registering to become organ donors in Canadian history due to one event – one person.

Almost 90% of Canadians say they support organ donation, but only 23% have actually registered their intent to donate. Though donation rates have improved over the last 10 years, there is more to be done as approximately 250 Canadians die annually waiting for an organ transplant.

On April 7, WEAR GREEN to remember the Humboldt Bus Tragedy and, in honour of the #LoganBouletEffect, let’s inspire one another by registering as donors and telling our families. Should you wish an official t-shirt, it can be purchased at the Green Shirt Day website.

Register · Tell Your Family · Be Inspired

Charity needs CAM’s help

With every donation that comes in, Repeat Champions is changing communities all over. Created to support local youth sports, Repeat Champions’ mission is threefold: RECYCLE. REPEAT. REWARD.

Repeat Champions encourages people everywhere to donate old and/or unwanted trophies and medals (no plaques) to be refurbished. Once the trophies are disassembled, cleaned, repaired and restored, they are ready to be donated back to any group in need, giving them a much-needed helping hand when funding is tight. Repeat Champions is saving countless pounds of scrap from ending up in our already overflowing landfills, which means they’re also helping the environment.
