MediaEdge announces new industry publication, Facility Cleaning and Management

MediaEdge Communications is pleased to announce that it has expanded its offering of industry-leading publications targeting the commercial real estate sector. Printed six times per year and emailed six times per quarter, Facility Cleaning & Maintenance (formerly Sanitation Canada) is an invaluable resource for building service contractors and in-house facility managers.

Micro Scrubbers Are Easier To Use, But Offer Fewer Features

Although small scrubbers can clean in places that larger machines cannot, manufacturers stress that they are not always as advanced as their larger counterparts. “The smaller machines in general do give up features and cleaning ability most of the time,” says Brady. “There have to be compromises made to reduce size in all cases and to keep costs under control.”

Why is humidity control so important?

Maintaining effective control of humidity is essential in industrial environments for both the health of the building and its occupants and, very often, supporting optimum performance of manufacturing processes. John Barker of Humidity Solutions explains. It is well accepted that humidity control is an essential element in maintaining a healthy environment with good indoor air quality, and this is something that applies to any space where people are living or working.

Know the Difference Between Green and Sustainable

There’s no doubt that green practices save money, are better for workers and the employees who work in the buildings. Embracing green is better for environment, improves waste streams, prevents air pollution, and reduces carbon output. That’s why so many commercial cleaning companies have already embraced green cleaning strategies. But what’s next in the green evolution? Surely we can all do better. Arthur Weissman, Green Seal President says, going green is just not enough in 2016.

Distributors Select The Year’s Top Janitorial Products

These products were chosen by jan/san distributors. They are the innovations that best answer customers’ needs, are proven performers and should be the staples of
every cleaning program. To determine the winners, we emailed ballots to Sanitary Maintenance readers earlier this year, asking them to vote for the industry’s best products. From the field of almost 300 entries, distributors picked the top 40 innovations. Ballots included products that were featured either in the pages of Sanitary Maintenance or on our website,, during 2015.

Even air dryers now come equipped with Bluetooth and lasers

Bluetooth-enabled air dryers with laser diagnostics are being demonstrated on the Ffuuss stand. The washroom dryers also incorporate colour-changing lights when in operation to enhance the user experience. And their stylish, slimline casings come in a vast number of colour and style options.

How can I reduce cleaning costs at my facility?

Reducing cleaning costs is a common goal for facility managers and cleaning contractors. Traditionally, the focus is on minimizing labor expenditures, but reducing cleaning supply costs can also prove to be a major savings.

Green Janitors Remind Us All to Turn Off the Lights

With more than one-third of global greenhouse emissions related to buildings, the success of sustainability initiatives rests on the shoulders of a largely unsung population: the service workers who operate and maintain them. A young vocational training initiative, the Green Janitor Education Program, aims to increase maintenance and cleaning staff’s understanding of eco-friendly practices, with a particular focus on energy efficiency.

Do Green Cleaning Certifications Matter?

I am oftentimes asked about the validity and value of green cleaning and many of the certifications that are being promoted today. First of all, unless the zombies actually do take over the world, I believe that green cleaning, sustainability and certifications are here to stay. If they do take over it may not matter in a post- apocalyptic world. Although there are many definitions I like to think of green cleaning as simply “using environmentally safe processes and products to clean an area or surface with minimal or no impact on the environment while protecting the health of all living things which includes humans as well as wildlife”.

B2B E-commerce Is No Longer Optional For Jan/san Distributors

The complexity of implementing a B2B e-commerce platform that is sophisticated, functional and user-friendly can often make jan/san distributors feel they are up against an impossible task. In the past, the feelings were warranted. B2B companies were often tasked with developing proprietary e-commerce programs in order to compete, a highly expensive endeavor, and just one of the many reasons distributors opted out.

A Toilet For India That Also Delivers Clean Water

In India, 600 million people lack access to a clean toilet, and, lately, the government has been on a big drive to build more of them. Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s "Clean India" campaign aims to provide decent sanitation to all Indians by 2019. SHRI, formerly called Humanure, has a solution it thinks can help. It builds a 16-toilet community block (eight for women and eight for men), with a big collection tank underneath. As the waste degrades, it pipes off the biogas to run an electric generator. Then it uses the electricity to clean groundwater, which it sells to offset the cost of cleaning the toilets.
