President Message

Why is it that when the last digit of the date changes by one number, we all mentally cleanse and start fresh with all sorts of plans and resolutions for the new year? As we go from 8 to 9, CAM is no exception. Sure, I'd like to personally lose weight, exercise more, and generally improve my mental health by having a well-balanced lifestyle (that means working less), but you know, I kind of want the same thing for the Canadian Association of Movers in 2019.

CAM is cutting the fat. We're working very hard at being much more efficient in how we do things and really looking at ways to make a leaner workload for those tasks that are huge time suckers and thus waste valuable time and money. CAM is also exercising more. We are way more active than we have been in years, and are going to continue by increasing our community relationships and expanding our key messaging. And CAM is getting more balanced with more members becoming involved on committees, projects, and partnerships and are actively engaging with us online improving the public image of Certified Professional Movers in Canada. Simply stated, the work we're doing together is improving the health of our Association.

2018 was a blockbuster year for CAM – largest voluntary membership to our Association; a stronger (and a little weirder) golf tournament; amazing new and strengthened financial supporters; and a breakout year in social media.

This year, we will continue the momentum and our committees, volunteers, and Board are reenergized after an amazing conference and a well-deserved holiday-season break. Looking forward to a fabulous 2019!

What’s CAM been up to?
CAM International Committee Report (by Nancy Irvine, President)

The committee had a considerable amount of personnel changes this past year and had challenges trying to get a quorum for a meeting. The committee met four times in the last 12 months to discuss or act upon the following issues:

Canada Border Service Agency (CBSA)’s requirement that a customer must be present when their goods are being brought into Canada. For two years, this committee has been urging CBSA and federal representatives to review this requirement. In February 2018, the CBSA ruled that the personal effects of temporary residents do not have to arrive with them and the documents may be released without CBSA documentation.

CAM Marketing Committee Report (by Thomas (Tom) S. Finlay, Committee Chair)

After a review of last convention, the committee got down to the task of the 2018 convention. The venue chosen is in Niagara Falls.

The Committee met regularly by conference call and over the past year had many successes, including:

  1. Social Media Presence! Active, regular posts on Facebook, LinkedIn, Instagram and Twitter.
  2. A successful year with the Reputable Mover Strategy.
  • Improved relationship with Financial Crimes Unit of the Toronto Police Service and participated in reuniting five shipments with customers.
  • Quickly identified online issues with misrepresentation and misdirection of CAM members’ social sites.

Do you have a CAM story to share?

came4_812019.jpg

The Canadian Association of Movers was formed on June 27, 1969. We've certainly had our ups and downs during our fifty years. With CAM being mainly voluntary for so much of that time, we find that there isn't much written history other than the last 20 years or so of AGM minutes and a few random photos from the 80s when they used to wear tuxes to the annual meeting – all very business-like and not very detailed. We'd like to know more!

With our industry being made up of families, what stories do you know about your parents or grandparents’ involvement with CAM over the years? We'd love to hear them and share with our members. Please get in touch with Marian or Nancy. It's time to reflect back and celebrate!
