President's Message

If you ask my daughter, she’ll say I have way too many apps. I tend to agree with her – I look at the number of screens on my phone and tablet and see oodles of bright and wonderfully designed icons. After two months of her barking at me about them, I started to sort out the 150+ apps and put them in folders. That certainly helped.

And then I went to a session at the AMSA conference that changed everything.

“60 apps in 60 minutes” was a wild one-hour session, where technology guru Jim Spellos, showed attendees more than sixty fabulous apps that are guaranteed to help with productivity, data safety, and saving time. Since one of our feature stories in CAM’s Spring The Canadian Mover magazine (out in late May) is on cyber theft and data security, I wanted to attend both of Spellos’ presentations at AMSA to get as much intel as possible. I was mostly interested in his “How Safe Is Your Data?” session, but at the last minute, I begged off another presentation to go to 60 Apps. I’m glad I did.

Below you will find a couple of files recapping both sessions. The 60 App one is particularly interesting because Spellos shared a full list of some of the latest (and hottest) apps that have proven to work. It was gratifying to know that I was using several of these apps already – Evernote, Google, and my favourite driving app – Waze – being among them. But there is truly an app for anything … enhancing communications, customer contact, team management and sharing tools, measuring apps, VPNs, photo-editing, travel apps, scan and send, health and emergency apps. There’s even an app that tells you when the best time to take a bathroom break is during a movie so you don’t miss the plot.

I think you’ll find the list quite exhaustive and hopefully very useful in helping you, and maybe your team, get organized and much more efficient with work this summer. I know some of them have already helped me. By the way, Jim has over 450 apps on his phone and is constantly looking for more. I don’t feel so bad now.

Michael Johnston - In Memoriam

April 30 - cam.jpg

After a courageous battle with cancer, it is with heavy hearts and great love that we advise of the passing of Michael Johnston on April 23, 2019. Michael was the Government Services & Corporate Accounts Manager at the Van Line. We will miss Michael's outstanding positivity. He always demonstrated a welcoming attitude with a huge smile. He will be remembered as an honest, humourous and respectful man who was always willing to help. Michael's dedicated work ethic was important to him as he insisted that he continue to work through his illness until he was unable to work. He found a home at United at the end of his career. Left to cherish Michael's memory is his loving children, Elizabeth, Alexander and Margaret.

A Celebration of Life will be held in the future. Details will be announced at a later date.

Our deepest sympathy goes to all Michael's family, friends and co-workers.

May is Moving Month – overview

Building on last year’s inaugural multi-media national awareness campaign, the Better Business Bureau (BBB) and CAM are once again teaming up to promote, throughout the month of May, the importance of hiring trusted and reliable movers.

Today, a joint media release is going out to nationwide outlets encouraging the public to do their research before hiring their mover. We discuss the various types of moving misfortunes that are currently going on in Canada, as well as the important tips to help consumers direct their research to find ethical and trustworthy moving companies. Obviously the main message is to contact CAM to find such movers, which in turn directs referrals to you.

May is Moving Month (MIMM) is so much more than just a press release at the beginning of May. Last year, with only a few weeks preparation, both organizations teamed up to put together credible messaging that resonated with the public...and it worked. Both organizations reported increased calls and website inquiries to not only find out about moving credibility, but also to search for those trusted movers. We also both received record numbers of complaints about movers – both those with scruples and mostly those that scammed their customers. Our social media platforms took off and we are now seeing fairly impressive growth. This year, we are expanding our messaging.

We will continue, as we do throughout the year, posting on our four social media platforms consistent messaging about calling CAM to find a trusted and reliable mover. We recently had a series of cartoons created that highlight what can happen if you hire a rogue. These have become immensely popular on our sites and many of you have been liking and sharing them.

The BBBs will also be doing their part by posting messages regularly throughout the month using the hashtags #MakeSafeMoves and #MoversYouCanTrust. There are also plans for newletter articles, radio PSAs in many of the ten BBB districts and a YouTube video with moving tips.

Do you want to help? You can, so easily! Just like and follow (‘see first’ in your Facebook feed) Canadian Association of Movers and you will see all of our posts that you are more than welcome to share or borrow. Many of you do already, and we thank you. In fact, some of you have found that posting our post on your own social sites has helped ‘legitimize’ your business compared to some of the shady competitors you face day in and day out. And connect with your local BBBs social pages – let’s spread the word and keep ‘moving’ out of the top 10 scams that the BBB deals with every year.

Spread the word to your staff as well. Here are the links to our Facebook, LinkedIn, Instagram and Twitter sites. Happy clicking and may your moving month be very fruitful.

May is Moving Month Media – you may get called!

You may get a call from your local media to comment on rogue operations or talk about professional moving services. Don’t be scared to do the interview – just speak from the heart and talk about your history in the moving business. Invite the media to tour your operation and see if they’d like to visit a move currently taking place (get the customer’s permission first) or learn the basics of packing a box or taking apart a table and wrapping it. There are also all sorts of simple messaging available for you to provide from CAM – please feel free to reach out to Nancy Irvine for assistance.

Tomorrow, Nancy will be recording a one hour radio program with the London office of the BBB. Nancy will be taping two segments. The first will be highlighting CAM’s year-round messaging about the 4 Basic Principles of Moving and the 5 Checks for Choosing a Mover. The second segment will be on “What to Expect When You Move” – a step-by-step run through of what the consumer can anticipate from a professional move, from the in-home estimate and move preparations, to the move day, delivery and claims process. The number one complaint about CAM members is that the customer did not understand the moving process fully. We are hoping that this segment (which will be available for you to post on your own websites or social media) will help – it certainly will open the eyes of consumers as to what constitutes a professional move.

CAM Consumer Tip Sheets

CAM has also produced, and posted in the consumer section of our website, Consumer Tip sheets based on the questions that we have received over the last year. There will be more to come, but this is a great start. Again, these are available for your use – especially you independent movers that may not have van line marketing materials to use. If any members would like to co-brand these tip sheets with us, please send Nancy Irvine your logo, website (or social media page) and phone number and she’ll be happy to make customized pdf documents for you.

And if you have any suggestions for other tip sheets, let us know. We’ll get them done and posted as soon as possible.

Below you will find a link for the latest, and greatest, apps available to you. There are 23 pages of alphabetically organized descriptions (sorry, only available in English). The yellow highlighted ones were discussed in the presentation and the green highlighted ones are “must haves” according to Jim Spellos. Jim’s contact info is included. If you’re interested, he puts out an informative newsletter. Feel free to reach out to him.

How Safe is Your Data?

Alarmingly not … as Nancy found out. There is a hacker attack somewhere in the world every 39 seconds. About 77% of attacks in 2017 were file-less (through WORD macros, Adobe Reader, Javascript and browser extensions) and in 2018, Malware and Ransomware attacks were up 62% in the US alone.

Up to 95% of security breaches are due to human error, often caused by careless downloading, easy passwords and lack of any data protection on your computers. For example, almost all malware on mobile phones comes through third party app stores (not Google Play or Apple – they vet their apps). Jim Spellos, known as “the best technology educator around”, suggested Malwarebytes.
