ECAO Hugh Carroll Safety Awards - The deadline is now February 28, 2020.

ecao2feb52020.pngThe nomination process for our Safety Awards is now open! The R. H. (Hugh) Carroll Award was created in 1999 by the Electrical Contractors Association of Ontario to pay tribute to member firms who best exemplify the dedication and commitment to safety in the electrical contracting industry as exhibited by R. H. (Hugh) Carroll through his years of service.

Past safety awards presentations were made at the ECAO Annual Meeting, but this year we are featuring a dedicated day to present these awards to winners and elevate the importance of occupational health and safety in the construction industry.

The Safety Awards Luncheon will be held on May 5, 2020, to showcase the winners and their commitment to a positive safety culture. The location has not been determined. ECAO hopes to also have keynote occupational health and safety speakers following the awards presentations.

Canadian Electrical Contractor Association (CECA)- U of T Hosts 2020 Building Case Competition

The CECA U of T Student Chapter recently hosted its third annual Sustainable Building Design Case Competition. They challenged student teams to present a proposal to a judging panel on how the Christie Refugee Welcome Centre in Toronto can reduce 60% of its energy. 

The participants this year were students Jiating (Chelsa) Lou, Ziyi (Jason) Wang, Paul Go, and Bo Zhao. They came up with some innovative solutions, such as a heat recovery ventilator, smart power strips with digital timers, and electric furnaces. They also integrated strategies to get the community engaged through social media platforms and interactive games.

Congratulations to all the participants! We were quite impressed with your effort, and we can’t wait to see how you place in the upcoming ELECTRI International/NECA Green Energy Challenge.

Ontario launches construction site safety blitz


Monte McNaughton, Ontario’s Minister of Labour, Training and Skills Development has announced workplace inspectors will begin a safety blitz that focuses on construction sites throughout the province.

During the safety blitz, inspectors will focus on personal protective equipment, including high visibility clothing, skin protection (like gloves), face shields, eye protection, and hearing protectors.

In 2017 alone, the ministry issued 7,483 orders for a lack of personal protective equipment on projects. This was the second-highest Occupational Health and Safety Act violation in construction workplaces for 2017.


New IBEW boss Barry will draw one line in the sand


James Barry the new IBEW CCO executive secretary-treasurer, is committed to taking a stand if the government takes any steps to erode the core of skills that currently define Ontario’s electricians.

“I think the core restricted skill set we have, our scope of practice if we see that is diminished or compromised or the restricted element is taken away, that is where we draw the line,” said Barry recently.


Pre-apprenticeship trades funding announced

Ministry Monte McNaughton was at Sheridan College in Brampton Jan. 31, Conestoga College in Kitchener-Waterloo the same day and Canadore College in North Bay Feb. 3.

In North Bay, the ministry will spend $600,000 to help train pre-apprenticeship general-carpenter, electrical-trade and machine-operator students at Canadore as well as other trades.

Employers certified by COR Programs have a greater reduction in injury rates: studies 

Scientist Dr. Chris McLeod from the Institute for Work & Health recently released a series of studies on how COR Programs can reduce injury rates. Their study reveals that CoR certified companies experience between 12% to 14% fewer lost-time injuries than non-CoR certified companies. And even among COR-certified companies, differences in injury rates can be found between lower-scoring companies and higher-scoring ones.

Outdated misconceptions about working in the skilled trades and technology fields are a significant obstacle Ontario must overcome to address a serious labour shortage that is projected to worsen over the next decade.


Pomerleau installs robot to track job site progress


MONTREAL — In what it says is a world-first, Quebec-based Pomerleau has initiated a six-month program to use a robot to track the progress of work at a construction worksite near Montreal.Spot, as the device is called, is a fully automated, battery-operated moving robot equipped with a 360-degree HD camera attached to its back, stated a Jan. 29 release. Pomerleau said its tracking systems will enable the robot to examine confined or dangerous spaces, improving safety for workers.

Certi-Fire Fire Alarm Distant Learning Level 3 and 5 Coming this Spring 2020 

Registration for Certi-Fire Fire Alarm & Protection Certification Program Distant Learning Level 3 is now open! The commencement date is March 25, 2020. The course starts at 6:30 in the evening. Participants are required to have an internet connection in order to attend the course via “Go to Meeting”. They can connect through a computer, laptop or tablet with a camera and microphone. Spots are limited!

Did you notice your Certi-Fire credentials have expired or are about to expire? Under the agreement with the Ontario Fire Marshal’s Office, the Certi-Fire Fire Alarm Certificate must be renewed every five years. We will run the Distant Learning Level 5 Recertification course on Thursday, March 26, 2020.
