President Message

Christmas is always an interesting time of year in the moving business. I remember as an estimator going into the homes and pulling the husband aside to find out how big and how heavy the gifts he was buying would be and then, later, doing the same with the wife. I learned the hard way.

Long before the days of gift cards, back in one of my first Christmases with the company, I was in a home several weeks before Christmas. Yes, the requisite 14 bins of Christmas decorations were there, the tree was up and approximately 70% of the gifts under the tree were for outside the home and would not be travelling with the family to their new home. But I wasn't experienced enough to separate the family to find out what they were giving each other and would it make a significant difference to the load moving across the country. Oops. He received a brand new lazy boy recliner and she found a sewing machine and cabinet under the tree. OK, not bad, as the chair threw off our cube a bit, and the sewing cabinet was heavier than normal, but I'd be able to work with it and work with the driver about the extra weight. But no one told me about the gift from Grandpa and Grandma because it was a surprise to the family – a hand-carpentered, full-size play house (the size of a tiny house!) broken down into over 60 parts with the assembly instructions.

Needless to say, the load ended up getting split, the poor guy tagging and listing was not very pleased, and my "guaranteed not to exceed" quote went out the window. You can imagine just how challenging it was to have two separate deliveries with the wrong stuff arriving first and the family being further inconvenienced by a $2,500 extra invoice, because the moving contract basically was null and void. We worked it out in the end, and everyone was happy (Grandpa paid the extra money), but I'd never forgot the situation and learned from it. Oh how gift cards would be way more appropriate.

I'm in China for Christmas rescuing my daughter who recently broke her ankle. Unable to do much of anything, I am her personal Sherpa, cook and cleaner, and assistant teacher (while she directs from a chair); but more importantly, someone to hang out with for Christmas. It will be the first one we've spent together in years, ironically, in a country that doesn't do Christmas. Wherever you happen to be and whomever you happen to be with, I wish you the very best for the holidays!

CAM Chairman's Report (by Cam Carswell, Chairman)

camcm_21122018.jpg

I am grateful to have the opportunity to serve as chairman of CAM this past year. As our Association settles down after three years of turmoil due to multiple Presidential appointments, we find ourselves celebrating a very successful year with the appointment of CAM’s current President, Nancy Irvine. We saw some significant developments at CAM including a new presence on social media, the increased frequency of our monthly newsletter Mover’s Edge to every two weeks, new Facebook event pages for CAM’s conference and golf tournament, and significant improvements to our sponsorship packages for these marquee events.

CAM Conference Committee Report (by David Ogilvy, Committee Chair)

cam3.1_21122018.jpg

After a review of last convention, the committee got down to the task of the 2018 convention. The venue chosen is in Niagara Falls.

Discussion, planning and picking dates, hotel, speakers and the trade show went on for several months. By January, the Crowne Plaza Fallsview and the theme “Building Blocks for Next Generation Performance” were confirmed. An outstanding slate of speakers was confirmed by February including representatives from AMSA, CERC, Deloitte, WCS Bridgeforce, and a social media presenter, who previously spoke to CAM in 2012. A presenter from Western Business Mechanics was confirmed in March.
