CAM News & Updates
President's Message

I’ve been meaning to do the Certified Professional Movers (CPM) course for three years now. When I arrived at CAM, there were several immediate to-dos that took priority – establishing an online presence, bolstering our membership, streamlining administrative processes and finding non-dues revenue, to name a few.

It’s been a year since Marian and I started the sometimes agonizing process of rebuilding and upgrading our website to a platform that would be functional within today’s cyber world. A huge chunk of the rebuild has been the members only section, which needed to be developed from scratch and designed in a way that would be functional for our members. We think we have it pretty well sorted now, but please let us know what you think as our website will always be a work in progress.

The need to construct the members only section forced me to do not only the CPM course, but also to review all of our training videos. Why had I not done this at the beginning of my tenure? These are amazing resources that will help out employees new to the industry, as well as be a great source for sales people to understand the operational side of our business. I want to thank Rick Taylor and Taylor Moving & Storage Ltd. for spearheading this project way back when. You have a future in voice-overs!

As for the CPM course, all I can say is WOW! If I had taken this when I was first starting out as a moving consultant, I would have an even better representative for my company than I was. I always believed that the person who went into the house to do the survey was the critical piece to getting the business. A professional demeanour, plus knowing what you are talking about, as well as being able to provide creative solutions, was the key to getting that business. But I learned the ins and outs of our industry the hard way.

I had twenty years of coordination experience upon my arrival, so my boss threw me in the deep end with only a few shadowing opportunities before my first government survey – over 31,000 lbs that took my boss and I three days to survey (they both were government employees having simultaneous relocations and therefore this ridiculous weight was approved).

I learned by making a lot of mistakes and sometimes getting yelled at by my Ops Manager, or spending a lot of time with the crew understanding how I could have relayed the information better to both sides of the move. If I had taken the CPM course before I started, it would have answered a lot of the practical questions that I had and I’d have been that much further along once I stepped through the customer’s door.

What’s stopping you from having your employees from becoming Certified Professional Movers? It’s free to members and can be completed on your own time or over a few days.

I’m proud to be Nancy Irvine, CPM. I’d like to congratulate my fellow “classmates” who also helped us with our CPM course beta testing:

  • Yvonne Blouin, Tippet-Richardson (Burnaby)
  • Debbie Gable, Tippet-Richardson (Burnaby)
  • Ben Thorgeirson, Tippet-Richardson (Calgary)

And just a “Mama’s note” … the pandemic is about to enter a new phase with schools open. Continue to be smart, vigilant and safe. A lot is riding on our businesses making it through the slow season.

Members Only Section of Website is Up and Running!

On May 5th CAM launched it’s new website ( with enhanced information for both consumers on the move and for members. Part of the revamping project was to move our highly-used Canadian Professional Mover (CPM) course and training modules to new platforms. Unfortunately, during this phase of the website development, these online education resources had to be pulled out of commission.

We’re pleased to say that all of these resources are available once again through a new Members Only portal that can be accessed from our home page.

  • The CPM course uses state-of-the art software that should provide registered students with a more trouble-free learning experience. We’ve already had four graduates!
  • Our popular training videos for helpers and new employees, and packing and unpacking are now available! These were created using an Adobe Flash Video and this format won’t be supported after December 31st but we are hopeful we’ll find a new format to support them going forward.

Your new and seasoned employees can benefit from using our Members Resources and education tools – and it’s all included in your annual membership fee. Members will need to obtain their new user codes from CAM to access these resources and students will have to be personally registered to take the CPM course.

Health Symptoms Reminder

With school back in session and more businesses opening up, not to mention the start of the fall allergy season, it’s time to remind everyone of the different symptoms and what they mean.  This is a reminder to all.  If you feel sick, stay home.  If you think you’ve been exposed to COVID-19, get tested.  Continue to wear a mask, keep your space and wash your hands.

Travel Restrictions & Re-Opening Information

It’s impossible to keep track of who’s open, who’s allowed to go where, and who’s wearing a mask and who isn’t.  In order to help, we now have all of the provinces and territories listed with the links to that information on the main page of our COVID-19 news section.

Stay up to Date!

We encourage you to check our COVID-19 section regularly on our website, as Nancy is still monitoring the various government briefings every day and that’s where we’re posting breaking news.

Be smart. Be vigilant. Be safe.

CAM Code of Ethics

A message from Nancy Irvine, President CAM

cam-sept152020-eng6-updated.jpgWe’ve had a few incidences this summer where cooler heads have not prevailed. Everyone is on edge and it’s been a tough summer. While it’s understandable that folks can lose it every once in a while, it is important to remember that, as a member of CAM, you have signed our Code of Ethics – a mantra that is unique to our Association and puts you one step forward when out battling head to head for business with non-CAM Members. Our Vice Chairman Milton Letkeman said to me about 18 months ago, when we were discussing rogues and moving scams, “We are an honourable profession.” That has stuck with me, especially when I am dealing with complaints. I’m proud to be a mover and represent our industry.

It is so important, when things get heated, to step back, take a breath, and take the high road, no matter how wrong the customer (or your employee) is. Show that you are worthy of your title of a professional mover. Take a few minutes to review the appropriate code for your membership.

Requirements for employers to prevent harassment and violence in federally regulated workplaces

If you are going to be doing any jobs in federally regulated workplaces, you should get a handle on the new rules coming into effect.

As of January 1, 2021, the legislation will come into force to ensure employers prevent harassment and violence in federally regulated industries and workplaces. As an employer in the federal jurisdiction, you should:

  • understand the definition of workplace harassment and violence,
  • develop a workplace harassment and violence prevention policy with the policy committee, the workplace committee or health and safety representative, and
  • assess the risk of workplace harassment and violence

Before January 1, 2021, you need to continue to:
