The Before Minded Cleaner
By Emalee A. Crosser

Proper and professional cleaning, now more than ever, is a vital component to the wellbeing of humans and the environment. An unhealthy environment cannot encourage health, and humans cannot be healthy if living in an unhealthy environment. It is an endless cycle that is dependent on many factors, and the way we use products and maintain facilities is one of great importance.

A new war on germs

In 1871, the Great Chicago Fire would result in the loss of 250 lives and leave an additional 100,000 people homeless. Some 40 years later, the Fire Marshals Association of North America decided that the anniversary of the Great Chicago Fire should henceforth be observed, not with festivities and thoughts of the past alone, but in a way that would keep the public informed about the importance of fire prevention.

Services & Maintenance: Key Pest Control Concerns For Facilities

Facility managers are often considered a jack of all trades, as they are responsible for maintaining the quality of a building and ensuring the safety of employees, patrons, and other occupants on a daily basis—all while adhering to budgetary restraints. This often results in pest control efforts being placed toward the bottom of the to-do list, done on a shoestring budget, or even forgotten altogether.

Seven Tips To Uncover Cost Savings In Janitorial Supplies

Expense Reduction Analysts (ERA), a global cost management consulting firm, announces the release of its latest whitepaper, “Office & Janitorial Suppliers: Insights to Realizing Greater Savings,” which outlines seven tips for organizations to uncover substantial cost-saving options in office and janitorial supplies.

Water Pressure Affects Chemical Dilution Accuracy

Changes in water pressure can be detrimental to the dilution accuracy of chemical proportioners. When water pressure increases, more water flows through a dilution control system. With higher water pressures, the flow of water through the dispenser also exceeds the ability of the unit to draw the appropriate amount of chemical into the water stream, resulting in improperly diluted chemicals, according to manufacturers.

Biofilms - should we worry?

Biofilms are everywhere. They are highly resilient; hard to remove and implicated in a staggering 80 per cent of infections. But what exactly are they? Are cleaners aware of the dangers they pose? And should we be scared?

Report Identifies Facility Trends Inside Office Buildings

New ideas and attitudes are evolving office spaces and ways of working. In order for Tork to not only understand the needs of clients, but also their clients’ needs, they produced the Tork Office Trend report. The report is based on a survey of 8,000 office workers in major cities around the globe, and a deep interview series with six experts in the office hygiene space.

’Tech for the masses’ cuts e coli test time to one hour

In the slums of Delhi, India more people have cellphones than clean drinking water, says Sushanta Mitra. The York University-based mechanical engineer hopes to use those phones and a tiny blob of gel to change that, creating a water testing tool he calls a new paradigm for sanitation.

Clinical trials confirm 'no-touch disinfection' properties of copper

Recently-published research from a joint US-Chile clinical trial studying the contribution of antimicrobial copper touch surfaces to environmental hygiene in a paediatric intensive care unit describes the intervention as a ‘no-touch disinfection technology' that warrants serious consideration as part of a bundle of infection prevention measures.

Hotel green practices spark job security concern

Hotel housekeeping employees are among the lowest wage earners in the hospitality industry and also the most vulnerable in terms of job security. As more and more hotel guests pass on having fresh, crisp sheets and pillowcases, dust-free surfaces, emptied waste baskets, vacuumed carpets, clean towels and a sparkling bathroom every day in exchange for cheaper rates, loyalty points or food credits, you have to wonder whether being environmentally friendly comes at the expense of jobs in certain cases.
