Hydro One Sending a Team to Support Power Grid Recovery Following California Wildfires
ELECTRICAL INDUSTRY CANADA

                                     ECAO-120518-3.jpg

Hydro One has mobilized around 20 highly specialized forestry technicians to help inspect the electrical system and assist crews following the devastating effects of wildfires in California. The fires caused widespread damage, and as a result every kilometre of line must be inspected before local communities can access power safely.

Hydro One's forestry department employees will help Pacific Gas and Electric Company with restoration efforts near Chico, California. The crews will support the inspection of 8,000 km of transmission lines and examine further risks associated with vegetation along the lines. As part of the North Atlantic Mutual Assistance Group, Hydro One has reciprocal agreements in place with North American utilities to provide assistance during significant power outages. In these mutual assistance situations, all costs are covered by the utility receiving help.

Should I install solar panels in my home? It depends where you live, National Energy Board says
THE STAR

                                    ECAO-120518-5.jpg

Installing solar panels already makes sense for most homeowners in Saskatchewan and Ontario but the National Energy Board says the abundance of cheap hydroelectricity in Quebec and Manitoba means solar power may never make much economic sense in those provinces.

In Canada, long, dark winters means it’s unlikely solar will ever become the sole source of electricity anywhere.

Electrical Safety Authority - Holiday Safety Tips
ECAO

Below is an actual fire incident that occurred in a home when holiday lighting was left unattended.

Please read the 10 safety tips below compiled by ESA to be safe this season.

10 Tips for Safe Holiday Decorating!

  1. Lights are rated for indoor or outdoor use. Read the package instructions, and never exceed the recommended wattage.
  2. Buy decorations with the mark of an accredited certification agency.
  3. No more than three light strings can be safely connected together in most cases — read manufacturers’ instructions for directions.
  4. Make sure bulbs don’t touch supply cords, wires, cloth, paper, or any material.
  5. Use the proper clips for securing lights and decorations. Staples and nails can damage electrical cords!
  6. Check for overhead powerlines before using a ladder outside or when you’re hanging lights on trees.
  7. Watch that children don’t put electrical decorations or cords in their mouths.
  8. Keep an eye on pets – they may chew or damage electrical cords.
  9. Turn off holiday lights and decorations when you leave the house or go to bed.
  10. Holiday decorations aren’t designed for year-round use and can deteriorate over time. Take them down when the holidays are over.
