President's Message

There’s no question that there is a lot of dishonourable activity going on this summer in the moving world. Scams are definitely on the rise with some operations appearing once again in our complaint file after taking a pause under their previous operational name. With the pandemic and financial stresses for vulnerable Canadians being high this year, their prey have been easy pickings. It’s frustrating indeed, but even more maddening than anything because these crooks can get away with committing fraud over and over again without any criminal charges brought against them.

CAM is making headway using our social media to warn consumers, but it is never enough. We have heard from many Canadians this summer that our messaging got forwarded to them through friends and family in time. They were able to make alternative moving arrangements with a reputable mover to move them rather than risk being in the same situation as hundreds of families who are stranded without their possessions or are completely depleted of their savings having given in to the ransom demands. I hate it and I know you do too.

Another dishonourable situation that has arisen this year, is the use of Facebook and Google to purposely bombard good, honest, movers with horrible reviews and one stars, driving their Google ratings down. We are aware of some instances where members are being purposely targeted by rival operations (non-CAM members) who have their staff create fake profiles and leave terrible comments and one-star ratings, quite often using inflammatory tones. As Google will never get around to dealing with deleting those reviews, our affected members took matters into their own hands and replied to each bad review with a comment explaining to the public that these reviews are fake. They also had their clients leave positive reviews on all their platforms. This serves two purposes … besides making you feel good, it also pushes the older reviews off the first couple of review pages. People rarely go past the second page of reviews before making up their mind, so you want to make sure that your newer ‘good’ comments are first and foremost and show up in the preview panel on Google.

Kudos to our members for taking back ownership of their reputation!

Please make sure that you, or someone on your staff, is regularly checking your Facebook comments as well as your Google, Homestars, Yelp, and BBB reviews. You do this by typing into Google your company name plus “reviews” (for example ‘CAM Moving & Storage reviews’). Even if you don’t have much of a social media presence, or don’t subscribe to any of these above, you still may have reviews on them and it’s important to know what folks are saying.

CAMs messaging is all about consumers doing their homework and checking out reviews. You don’t want to find out that you’ve been missing out on business because your company has been targeted. If you would like some help navigating around to check out your reviews, please don’t hesitate to contact me.

As the summer moving season is coming to an end, continue to be smart, vigilant and safe.

Golfing this year? Registration is currently full.  Waiting list only.

CAM’s physically-distant golf day is set for Monday, September 14th at Carlisle Golf Club, a 20-minute drive from Burlington, Ontario. We have five tee times set between 11:00 am – 12 noon to accommodate 40 golfers. Many of the regulars will be back.

If you would like to be put on the waiting list for last minute cancellations, please contact the office as soon as possible. There is a possibility that by September 14th we may be able to add more tee off times, so get your name down just in case.

Your golf registration includes – individual power cart, lunch, 2 non-alcoholic beverages, 2 adult beverages, a post-game munchie, as well as a swag bag and a draw prize (courtesy of our wonderful sponsors).

While everyone will be physically distant, there still is an opportunity to see each other post round in a reserved, well-spaced-out, open-air patio setting, which will be personally sanitized by CAM staff just before you come off the course.

CAM Supplier: G M Packaging Ltd.

Open 7 days a week

G M Packaging has been selling to the moving industry for over 24 years. We offer exclusive discounted pricing to all movers and carry a wide selection of quality moving, storage and packaging supplies.

Some of the most popular products that we sell are: boxes, newsprint, mattress and furniture covers, Krubble, tapes, stretch wrap, bubble wrap, foam, furniture blankets, floor runners, dollies, straps, and piano skids. Our complete line of moving supplies is quite extensive and geared to meet the changing needs and demands of the moving industry.

One example is our TV|Art|Mirror (heavy duty double walled) boxes which are very economical for providing excellent protection. The only thing on the market stronger are wooden crates. We offer four sizes fitting up to a 70” TV along with our proven TV foam kits that fit all four sizes. The boxes and foam kits have been tested and approved by major van lines across Canada. These have been sold for over nine years across Canada with five-star reviews and are available from Canadian distributors.

Since we sell general packaging supplies into other industries, our selection of protective packaging is much larger than most competitors selling solely to the moving industry.

Another unique feature of our business is that we have no minimum quantity requirements – if you just need a couple rolls of tape or one mattress bag, we welcome your order. This option helps reduce inventory costs, storage, and damaged and lost products. It also provides cost control efficiencies on each move.

Responding to the specific needs of our customers’ business is important to us and one way we demonstrate that is by being open seven days a week. This is a great help to movers, especially on Saturday and Sunday when those extra supplies are required.

For more information on our products or Canadian distributors that carry our products contact us at We look forward to serving you!

The federal government announced this week that it has set a minimum unemployment rate for EI so that more Canadians can access it.

If you can’t buy ’em, we’ll tell you how to make ’em

On August 3rd, Clorox announced that the brand’s popular sanitizing wipes wouldn’t be fully available on retail shelves until early 2021. This isn’t likely to catch truck drivers by surprise.

The inability to find wipes has been one of the most common complaints from drivers striving to keep their environment as clean and safe as possible since the COVID-19 outbreak. Many have found accessing any kind of cleaning product to be difficult in the past few months including adequate supplies of disposable sanitizing wipes.

Want to make your own sanitizing wipes? Check this out.

Be safe out there, drivers. You’re the most important asset you have.

Travel Restrictions & Re-Opening Information

It’s impossible to keep track of who’s open, who’s allowed to go where, and who’s wearing a mask and who isn’t. In order to help, we now have all of the provinces and territories listed with links to that information on the main page of our COVID-19 news section

Stay up to Date!

We encourage you to check our COVID-19 section regularly on our website, as Nancy is still monitoring the various government briefings every day and that’s where we’re posting breaking news.

Be smart. Be vigilant. Be safe.

Returning to the Workplace When Your Job Has Changed

cameng-aug182020-7.jpgWe know that many of our members have administrative and sales staff working from home.  Since most of the country is now making bigger bubbles and contemplating school returning in the Fall, many of our members are considering that it’s time to bring those home workers back into the office, perhaps to new roles and certainly to new conditions.  We’d like to thank EAP provider Shepell FGI for this timely information.

Travelling in PA or NJ?  Spotted Lanternfly - Permits and training now required

cam-aug182020-8.jpgHave you ever heard of the Spotted Lanternfly? This little insect is a dangerous pest that can destroy trees and agriculture, with the potential to greatly impact the grape, hops and logging industries and can easily spread to other areas. It’s also about to turn the trucking industry on its ear if you travel into certain areas of Pennsylvania, New Jersey and New York, where it’s been spotted.

The Spotted Lanternfly can jump and fly short distances. They spread primarily through human activity, often hitching rides to new areas when they lay their eggs on vehicles, firewood, outdoor furniture, stone, etc. and are inadvertently transported to new areas. To prevent the spread of the Spotted Lanternfly, a series of quarantined areas that will impact your trucks have been designated in the affected states.

At this point, the primary impacted areas are in Pennsylvania and New Jersey. If your vehicles stop in the quarantine zones for any purpose (other than for refueling or at a traffic signal), including to take a rest break, you are required to obtain training and a permit. The training and permits are FREE and can be completed online; however, effective May 1, the Pennsylvania State Police and Department of Agriculture began hard enforcement with roadside stops and penalties issued for non-compliance.

Here is a list of the affected counties and how to obtain a permit and training.
