President's Holiday Message

Happy 2016 to our returning and new members, and welcome to what I know will be another great year for the CSSA (The Canadian Sanitation Supply Association). Click the arrow on the right for the complete message.

Janitorial Distributor sales now total $24.6 billion

The “Report on 2014 Sanitary Supply Distributor Sales” was released the other day and there are some changes in the data from past years. Its primary purpose was to gather information on distributor sales of chemicals, janitorial supplies, paper/plastic products and power equipment in the United States and Canada.  Data shown in this report was derived from non-duplicated questionnaires returned from a random sample of Sanitary Maintenance readers, which includes ISSA members.

Sustainability Reporting Increases, Bringing Benefits

Few have noticed, but more companies in the U.S. and around the world are issuing sustainability reports today than have ever done before. In 2010, only about 20 percent of the Standard and Poor's 500 companies had published regular sustainability reports. By 2015, that number had jumped to 75 percent.

Go Green With Alternative Fibers, Recycled Paper Towels

In addition to saving on labor, long roll towel and tissue can help customers reduce their environmental footprints. “One of the benefits for the category in general is less packaging waste,” says Keith Schneringer, marketing manager for WAXIE Sanitary Supply, San Diego. “If you have a case of six 2,000-foot tissue rolls, for example, you only have six cardboard cores, whereas with a case of 12 standard 350-foot rolls, you have 12 cores, plus you’d have to buy a second case to have the same amount of paper.”

Towel Dispensers Can Adapt To Coreless Tissue, Longer Rolls

Although some long-roll towel and tissue dispensers have a larger footprint than standard-size dispensers, many systems today feature a slim profile that fits well in most facilities, says distributors. In restroom stalls where space is limited, customers may need to be more cognizant of the tissue dispenser’s size and location. Some of the most common types of dispensers accommodate a single jumbo roll, two jumbo rolls side by side or a single roll with a stub-roll feature.

Etiquette Of Cleaning Open Office Spaces

Office spaces are changing. The days of one office for each staffer are fast disappearing, even on the executive level. For the most part, this is being done to help encourage teamwork and collaboration but without stifling individual creativity or freedoms. However, adjusting to the open office space can take time, including the cleaning professionals who must clean and maintain these locations.

Eco-friendly brands clean up in customer satisfaction awards

Many Australians are favouring a ‘clear conscious’ approach to household cleaning, with Canstar Blue’s first home cleaning product awards dominated by environmentally-conscious brands. Earth Choice, from Natures Organics, has picked up three out of the six awards on offer. Orange Power, from Aware Environmental, claimed another. Head of Canstar Blue, Megan Doyle, said consumers demand effective cleaning products, but they also like the feel good factor that comes with buying environmentally responsible brands.

Top 10 Hand Hygiene Articles Of 2015

As we wrap up another year we'd like to thank all our subscribers and occasional readers by sharing with you our most popular articles on hand hygiene, infection prevention and food safety from this year. Here are the Top 10 Hand Hygiene Articles of 2015.

Nearly all cleaning industry students get jobs

When we think of a cleaner as a professional many still cling to outdated images of an aging female janitor dragging a bucket and mop. Professional cleaning as an industry is a far cry from this stereotype. One person who has come face to face with this reality is Lea Vielmaa, who studies cleaning. Vielmaa has studied cleaning and hygiene for some six months in the Winnova polytechnic in Pori. Her perceptions of cleaning have changed in that time.

Cascades Named Most Responsible Organization in Quebec, Looks to B2B Marketer to Break Into the US Market

Environmental awareness and best practices are key selling points in B2B marketing, and when a Canadian company hoping to break into the U.S. market wins awards, it is important to note that a campaign is clearly working well for the company's overall objectives.

Survey Identifies Infection Hot Spots And Prevention Tips

As the flu season ramps up, this is the perfect time to remember common cleaning practices, in addition to vaccinations that are effective in preventing the spread of influenza and the common cold, such as disinfecting shared surfaces.

Five Steps To Better Handle Feedback On Custodial Operations

Avery Products Corporation recently introduced its UltraDuty™ GHS Chemical Labels, a line of heavy-duty industrial labels designed to help organizations comply with the OSHA-mandated Globally Harmonized System of Classification and Labeling of Chemicals (GHS). The United Nations created the GHS to standardize and harmonize the classification and labeling of hazardous chemicals around the world.

Hand washing - why so vital?

In most food processing or food service industries the handling of food is commonplace and often impossible to avoid. Cross-contamination by the transfer of pathogenic or food spoilage organisms can be a significant issue. A lack of hand washing when required and not following a correct hand washing procedure are the most common problems observed in these environments.
