President's Message

Picture1.jpg

Sleep deprivation is a horrible thing. As my board and committees know, I’ve been severely hampered by five weeks of three to four hours of sleep as I had a new roommate – a racoon, and then her babies, in an inaccessible part of the Victorian-era roof above my flat. Thanks to my landlord taking off the side of the roof to get at them, the racoon(s) are gone now, but the whole experience really took me back to the days of working with little sleep and trying to manage the incredible surge of estimates, calls, and home visits, that started shortly after Victoria Day and kept going until mid-August.

I’ve noticed a huge improvement in my cognitive ability the past three days – I am actually remembering things and making sense when I talk to people. In hindsight, I was so impaired by lack of sleep that I likely shouldn’t have been driving on the 400 series highways these past few weeks.

I’ve been reading a lot about sleep and “sleep debt” lately as it’s been top of mind with me. Seven to nine hours of sleep a night; regular bedtime routine; no TV, ipad, or phone an hour or so before bedtime; no more caffeine after 5pm and no eating at least two to three hours before bed, are all ways to counteract lack of sleep. Easier said than done.

As we head into that enduring three months of sleep deprivation, make sure you and your staff do your best to get some sleep. The last thing you need to be is cranky and intolerant of your clients or make big mistakes on paperwork because you can’t concentrate.

If you’d like to learn more about the importance of sleep and sleep debt, here’s a very detailed article from The Medical News Today. May you all experience sweet dreams this summer!

Welcome to new members

CAM would like to welcome these three new members to the Association: Traditional Moving & Storage in Winnipeg, MB, Summit Moving & Storage in Langley, BC and Quantum Robotic Systems Inc. in Toronto, ON.

Many of you will be familiar with Quantum Robotics having visited them at their booth at our 2018 trade show in Niagara Falls where they displayed their innovative stair-climbing robotic system. Be sure to come and check out their next-generation climber at our 2019 trade show in Blue Mountain.

Also returning as a CAM member is Virtual Moving Technologies, a supplier of virtual video survey and estimating services.

May is Moving Month

cam-may14-1.png

We’re halfway through May is Moving Month and it’s been a busy time. In the first five days of the campaign, CAM was either mentioned or quoted over forty times – that was almost the whole amount from 2018’s inaugural campaign, thanks in large part to the joint press release with the BBB that has had national exposure. We even got a mention on WHNT.com in Huntsville Alabama!

It might be May 14th, but we haven’t let up and neither has the BBB. We’ll continue to do media interviews and social posts throughout the month and we encourage you to reach out to your local media and offer a tour of your place or take them on a move and show them what a proper move looks like. If you are nervous about approaching media or need some help, let Nancy know – she’ll give you a hand.

Nancy did a widely circulated radio interview with 980 CFPL out of London, Ontario which focused on using a trusted and reliable mover and what to expect when you move with a certified professional mover. Feel free to post it on your social media sites and direct your customers to it. If you’re dealing with a major low-ball quote – maybe having your customer listen to this interview will make them think twice about who they hire.

Keep liking and sharing the BBB and CAM social posts this month! We’ve got a bunch of them that are similar to this one and, as well, our popular cartoon series.

Last year to get Ontario MELT driver training grant

2019 Grants are now available!

Do some of your employees need a DZ or AZ license? Did you know that moving companies can recoup between 82% to 100% of training costs if the company is under 100 employees, or 50% if over 100 employees, through Ontario MELT driver training grants?

This grant can be used for existing employees, or “potential” employees without being on payroll but have a letter of employment. You can apply now, secure the funding, and do the training later.

Ontario Truck Training Academy has six locations from Mississauga to Prescott, and have access to other training facilities in Ontario to cover Windsor to Mississauga. Not from Ontario? Well, the OTTA can hook you up with training academies across the country.

Contact Yvette Lagrois at 1-800-753-2284 for more information on how to get started.

The Canadian Mover out soon

In the coming weeks, the spring issue of The Canadian Mover will be arriving at your doorstep. In addition to the regular messages, the issue will contain important articles on cyber theft and protecting data, the current labour crisis, the changes in the Canadian moving industry and the need to adjust (a follow-up to A Preliminary Framework for Moving Industry Change, which appeared in the fall 2018 issue of The Canadian Mover), a 2018 conference wrap-up and a two-page teaser of our 2019 conference. As well, this issue will contain our member directory.

Make Coaching and Mentoring Work for You

cam-may14-2.pngOne of the things that we heard over and over again from the “40Below” group at the recent AMSA conference was that this generation expects training and mentorship guarantees from their employer, or they often will go somewhere that does offer advancement.

Coaching and mentoring can have a significant positive impact on worker recruitment and retention. When designed and implemented effectively, a coaching and mentoring program can help overcome intergenerational disconnects in your workplace, support your safety culture, and increase employee engagement.

CAM Annual Conference & Trade Show

Only 184 sleeps until the CAM Conference in Blue Mountain, Ontario. While that might seem like a long time away, it will fly by. We hope you will consider attending this year. Not only is the location fantastic – with its own fully-equipped village as part of the hotel complex, but the conference itself will be full of education and fun.

In fact, for the first time ever, CAM is going to have a special guest – a gregarious and dynamic comedian with a knack for telling it like it is – Rob Pue! We are so looking forward to Rob’s clean humour. And he knows a little bit about moving, having been a military brat out of Halifax. If you’d like a tease of what Rob will bring to our conference, check out Rob’s recent performances at Ha! and the Winnipeg Comedy Festival.

And, as always, thank you to our sponsors. If you’d like to get in on the action, contact Nancy Irvine or Steve Stockill to find out more.

CAM Golf Day - Friday the 13th of September

CAM EN2_03132019.png

Golf at the Royal Niagara Golf Course is going to be epic this year. Even if you don’t golf that well, why not grab a few friends and check it out (or come by yourself and we’ll get you on a team)? Good luck charms, superstitions, and an homage to Jason Voorhees are all part of the fun. Tee-off time is at 11 am, so you’ll be home at a reasonable time. Or stay over – CAM Member Motel 6 will leave the light on at their Niagara Falls location.

There’s lots of opportunity to be involved if you can’t be there in person … we have some awesome sponsorship opportunities and Nancy will help out with hole activities if you are interested in that.

The Early Bird contest is finished by July 31st, so make sure you get in on that – win a free foursome for your friends, staff or clients. More information on that and registering is available here.
