President's Message

It’s surreal to be writing this issue’s message and not be focusing on COVID-19. Having lived and breathed everything pandemic for the past five months, it’s just so strange to be thinking of other things and moving forward. The virus is never far from my mind, but it’s time.

So many projects were in our planning funnel for the spring and especially the summer months before COVID-19 hit. Of course, that all went out the window in late February when we starting planning how to get the COVID messaging out to you, when we had no idea how the messaging was going to get to us. But we did and I think we did a more than decent job of keeping you up to date so you could focus on your business, employees, and family.

We are actively working on completing the first phase of the new website development, that was significantly slowed down during the first few months of the pandemic. As well, golf planning is going ahead in earnest. You will find out about both in the news section below.

The bulk of our time these days has been taken up with consumer inquiries. Not a bad problem to have! It indicates that our social media messaging has really gained traction and more consumers are questioning their choice of movers with us. And a lot of them are asking questions … our consumer-facing website has really come in handy to help us out! We certainly hope that this increase in consumer interest in CAM is parlaying into more business for you.

May the second half of the summer season be fruitful for you. Continue to be smart, vigilant and safe.

Do you have 20 seconds for a question or two on virtual surveying?

We are running this super-quick survey again in hopes of getting a few more responses. We are trying to determine whether or not to do some education programming on virtual surveying and would appreciate 20 seconds of your time to help us decide. (If you do want us to contact you, please leave your name and email in the relevant survey box for us.) Thank you.

Golf is still a go!

At present, our golf day is set for Monday, September 14th at Carlisle Golf Club, a 20-minute drive from Burlington, Ontario. Nancy spent the past three months in disucssions with the golf course and visited them last Tuesday to review the various requirements for golf to go ahead in some scaled back, safe, way. As a result, CAM sent a detailed, four-page document highlighting all aspects of the day to participants from the past three years to guage their interest in golfing this year.

We will assess the responses and a decision will be made by August 10, 2020 as to whether or not the golf will go ahead. It would strictly be golf – nothing else – CAM essentially would be booking five tee times and arranging lunch, post game munchies and beverages along the way.

If you did not receive an email on July 29th regarding golf and are interested in seeing the document or inquiring about our golf day, please let our office know as soon as possible. If we go ahead, spaces will be limited to 40 golfers.

New website a hit!

Now up and running for a full two months,, in the past month, has had 8,865 new users with almost 14,000 page views! We are so thrilled with the traction the new site is gaining. Besides the English and French main pages, the most popular sections are:

It is great to know, that although our phones are ringing, not surprisingly, 75% of our website traffic is going to pages that have to do with searching for a trusted and reliable mover. A further 15% of clicks are consumers looking at our new beefed-up consumer section to get moving tips and information to help them prepare for their move. Our hunch to have the Association become more consumer facing is paying off. More consumer interest = more inquiries about CAM members = more business for our membership. We are commited to continuing with our social media messaging and education plan while pointing consumers to

COVID-19 Update

Download COVID Alert today

COVID Alert, a new national mobile app, is now available to Canadians for free download. The app, first developed in Ontario, helps notify users if they may have been exposed to someone who has tested positive for COVID-19.  You can download COVID Alert today through this link.

CERB UPDATE (Canadian Emergency Response Benefit)

The federal government eventually wants to transfer all ECP recipients, who are still unable to return to work due to COVID-19 to Employment Insurance (EI).

The government will announce in the coming weeks, the parallel transitional benefit similar to that of employment insurance for those who are not eligible for employment insurance.

This will include access to training and allow those who receive it to work more hours and earn more money.

In addition, a COVID-19 sickness and caregiver benefit for those who are not eligible for such benefits through EI or their job.

As soon as the details are officially available from the government, we will be able to share them with you.

To keep up with CERB updates:

Travel Restrictions & Re-Opening Information

It’s impossible to keep track of who’s open, who’s allowed to go where, and who’s wearing a mask and who isn’t. In order to help, we now have all of the provinces and territories listed with links to that information on the main page of our COVID-19 news section

Stay up to Date!

We encourage you to check our COVID-19 section regularly on our website, as Nancy is still monitoring the various government briefings every day and that’s where we’re posting breaking news.

Be smart. Be vigilant. Be safe.

IAM to Take 2020 Conference Completely Virtual

cam4310720.pngWe are pleased to share this message from Chuck White, President of the International Association of Movers.  Like us, they’ve made a hard decision to forego face-to-face meetings.  We hope you take advantage of the virtual opportunity that IAM is putting forward.  Find out more about IAM’s virtual conference program here.

IAM’s Portal's July/August Issue: Women Leaders in the Moving Industry

cam5310720.jpgNancy was invited by IAM’s YP (Young Professional) group to provide some background on her experience as a female in a top-level position in the moving industry.  Clearly not a young professional, she was also asked what kind of advice she would give to anyone coming up in the business today.  Nancy spent a lot of time with the younger set at the IAM conference last year and is an honourary member of the group, listening and learning what is important and drives younger movers to embrace the industry like she and her cronies have.  One of Nancy’s goals is to get a collaborative group going in Canada.  The IAM-YP’s came up with a name – YMCA (Young Movers in Canada Association) – and suggested we work on a catchy tune to go with it.  You can read Nancy’s article (and those of the other fine women represented throughout the world).

AMSA’s Direction online

cam6310720.jpgThe current issue of AMSA’s Direction magazine is now available to view online.  This issue focuses on how AMSA members are creating virtual solutions for creative business practices, are getting in front of their legislators to keep their industry moving forward and how AMSA members continue to support their communities.

Conference Update:  No ‘In Person’ Meeting in 2020

As you are aware, the planned conference for Edmonton in November was postponed until 2021, with the hopes that we might be able to pull off a smaller, informal gathering of some sort in the Toronto area to replace it for this year. After considerable research and meetings with hotel executives and meeting planners throughout North America, as well as consultation with CAM’s Executive, CAM is halting any meeting planning and will not be going forward with an in person or extensive virtual meeting this fall or winter. CAM assumes a huge risk, as well as a significant expense, to pull one off.

We will continue to evaluate our options for hosting an uncomplicated virtual option for a November one-hour Annual General Meeting. We will advise the membership once that is worked out.

The next in-person conference will be Edmonton on November 14-16, 2021. We negotiated a new, spectacularly fair, contract with Sutton Place Hotel in Edmonton and our full slate of speakers were happy to delay a year and join us then. We will continue to work with Edmonton Tourism to put on a great show next year!

We’d like to thank our sponsors who have generously continued to support us through these crazy times. We look forward to the 16 months ahead of us!
