President's Message

CAM15082018a.JPGRespect. As a sales gal, I always made sure that the crews knew that I appreciated them. Whether it was with a detailed description (and often a photo) of what they would be walking into in the morning (a three-storey walk-up, a small elevator, a tight turn around for the driver, low hanging wires, or super fragile furniture), or coffee and water during the day, or a homemade cookie or date square when they got back to the shop, I think the crews appreciated and knew that I respected the work they did. It made our team work – especially as they knew that they could come directly to me and explain how I screwed up a quote or could have better arranged or explained something to the customer, therefore learning for the next time and avoiding potential on-site conflict.

I had some time owing to me, so I took a once-in-a-lifetime month-long trip this summer to Europe. My daughter, having worked as a packer and swamper in the industry, was quick to point out moving companies or things of interest to do with the industry while we were touring around. Although we didn’t see a lot of moving trucks, we lived in homes that had three (or more!) storey walk-ups and stairwells so tight that you almost had to turn sideways to lug up your suitcase. My respect for moving crews went up several notches.

CAM15082018b.jpgOne of the places we stayed in just had furniture replaced. No elevator to speak of, and completely dark, I wondered how the crew managed to get a queen-size bed frame up three flights of circular steps? My answer came in Zurich, and then again in Florence, when we saw external elevators being used to move people’s belongings from the higher floors. I excitedly posted on social media my pics and video, only to have my international friends explain that this is a normal practice in Europe, where the streets and stairwells are far too narrow for moving personnel and equipment. It certainly made those crews’ lives easier.

But in Canada, it isn’t a normal practice. So, in this record-breaking heat, I want to give a shout out to the drivers and crews who have to deal with challenging stairwells, narrow hallways, steep driveways, low ceilings, uneven walkways, and the myriad of other structural challenges they deal with day in and day out. I marvel at how you can manoeuvre furniture with such ease through a home. Continued respect, always.

Passing of Peter Naylor

CAM20082018a.jpgIt’s with great sadness that we announce the passing of Peter H. Naylor. Peter was not only a leader of an eminent company, Tippet-Richardson, but also a leader in the moving and storage industry. He was a driving force in the reestablishment of CAM in 1996 and served as President and Vice-President in CAM’s early years. Peter continued to be a long-time, staunch supporter of CAM. Our deepest condolences to Peter’s family and friends.
