National Electrical Contractors Association (NECA) 2018 Convention
ECAO

ECAO Executive Director Graeme Aitken, and ECAO’s Labour Relations Manager, Jodi Travers, attending the 2018 NECA. Along with many keynote speakers, President Donald Trump spoke on October 2 at the NECA convention.

Trump’s speech will cap off the convention, which began on September 28th. The president will reportedly deliver remarks to an audience of 10,000 electrical contractors, electricians and apprentices from across the country. He is expected to talk about the economy, tax reform and the importance of apprenticeships.

WSIB Announces UFL Eliminated, 2019 Rates at AGM
WSIB

At its AGM on September 26th, the WSIB announced that its unfunded liability (UFL) has
been eliminated and made public the 2019 premium rates.

The elimination of the UFL has made significant rate reductions possible. Here are the
facts:

  • The average premium rate reduction for 2019 across all Schedule 1 employers is 29.8%
  • The average premium rate decrease for Schedule 1 employers went from $2.35 per every $100 of payroll in 2018 to $1.65 in 2019
  • The maximum earnings ceiling increased from 490,300 in 2018 to $92,600 in 2019
  • All but 7 Rate Groups received reductions; 2019 rates for those seven Rate Groups will remain the same as in 2018
  • Decreases for construction Rate Groups ranged from 30.6% to 48%

Certi-fire Distance Learning Level 5 coming October 18th.
ECAO

ECAO members and their employees who carry the Certifire certification should keep their credentials up to date with the new Level 5 Distance Learning module. This distance module is conducted by Mark Steane, through web casting, and can be completed from the comfort of home or office, and no need to travel. New electricity market design will lead to cost-savings for all Ontarians
IESO

The Independent Electricity System Operator announced a new market renewal program which will serve as a blueprint to addressing longstanding concerns with the design of Ontario's current markets and is the first step in the broader redesign of Ontario's electricity market. When fully implemented, the market renewal program is expected to create $3.4 billion in savings over a 10-year period with the potential to reach as high as $5.2 billion.

Canadian Apprenticeship Forum Creates Online Forum for Apprentices
CANADIAN APPRENTICESHIP FORUM

ECAO02102019d.jpgApprentices in Canada e-panel is a new online platform that collects feedback from apprentices on their training experiences. Participants can provide input on the issues, challenges and limitations they face by completing a few brief surveys each year.

Participant responses are confidential, and will be summarized and reported along with responses from other Apprentices in Canada.

Their feedback will be used to

  • better understand the experiences of apprentices/journeypersons
  • discuss the needs of those working in the skilled trades
  • inform public policy and programs on the skilled trades

Incentives are available: each time participants complete a survey, they will be entered into a draw to win prizes of up to $1,000.

Ontario Electrical League Launches Pilot Project to Promote Electrical Apprenticeships
ELECTRICAL INDUSTRY

With over $600,000 in funding from the federal government, OEL’s Consortia Pilot Project – Employer Engagement aims to increase the number of employers who train apprentices in the electrical sector.

Under the program, OEL will recruit and train employers who have never been involved in apprenticeship training. A total of 20 employers and 20 apprentices will benefit from the investment, and an employer consortium will be created. At the end of the project, lessons learned during the pilot will be expanded to other geographic areas in Ontario so that more employers can benefit from them.

Electrical Safety Authority Hosts 2018 Safety Awards
ESA SAFE

Sept. 28, 2018, the Electrical Safety Authority (ESA) held its Annual Meeting and Ontario Electrical Safety Awards to celebrate achievements in electrical safety. The award recipients – a municipality, a utility worker and a Licensed Electrical Contractor ( Captain Electric) – illustrated that electrical safety is a shared responsibility that touches all individuals and organizations across the province.

In addition to the awards, ESA’s Board Chair, Brian Bentz, and Chief Executive Officer, David Collie highlighted ESA’s fiscal year accomplishments as part of its current corporate strategy: the Harm Reduction Strategy 2.0. For ESA’s annual report, visit esasafe.com.

Canadian Construction Association (CCA) National Awards Program 2018
ELECTRICAL INDUSTRY

The CCA awards program is open to all organizations and individuals who meet the requirements of each award, regardless of organization size or project scope. For each award, the nomination should demonstrate a promotion and advancement of the construction industry in Canada.
