President's Message

Well, it’s been three months, and now we are in the new norm of providing our services under unique and unprecedented circumstances. Your crews, who worked throughout the first wave of COVID-19, now have “the drill” down perfect. As you bring on your summer crew, and folks return to the office for the first time, they will need to adjust - but with your procedures being old hat to your full-time staff, hopefully the transition for your part-timers will be easy and eagerly followed.

In March, all of our members were forced to adopt a whole new set of standard operating procedures. It was a scary time – not only for understanding what was needed to be done to keep your customers safe, but also your employees, and most importantly, you and your family. I remember having conversations with movers of all ages and experience about their real concern and nervousness during those first few weeks. I commend everyone for keeping a level head and carrying on. We got through it by sharing information and keeping communication lines open.

The International Association of Movers, on behalf of the moving world, is putting together best practices documentation on what worked around the world that could be easily adapted for your company.

CAM has been recognized by IAM as “having been way out in front of disseminating COVID-19 information in North America and having put together some stellar resources.” Our International Committee started the ball rolling back in early February with questions about accepting international shipments and going into the homes of recently-arrived customers who came from outbreak areas. Of course, we had a ringer too – my daughter, who lives in China, who provided daily updates of the extreme measures being taken in her province to combat the spread of the deadly virus.

As such, I have been asked to assist with compiling the information, so let’s make sure that Canada gets on this map! You will find the details below in the COVID-19 section. You do not need to be an international mover or a member of IAM to participate.

I ask that you please take a few minutes and fill out the short form. This document is being prepared so that future generations have a pandemic playbook to work with to get started, rather than the clean slate we all had this time around. Remember when you didn’t know what you were doing? Well, let’s give the next generation of movers a foot through the door.

COVID-19 Update

Remember to be diligent with your cleaning!

Everyone is tired of the pandemic and the rules around safety. With the lockdown being relaxed and people out in the public more, we need to be reminded that the virus is still out there and circulating! Now is the perfect time to remind your staff to continue with the general safety precautions:

  • Practicing appropriate hygiene everywhere including in the office, washroom, warehouse, moving truck and customer’s home or worksite.
  • Frequently washing hands with soap and hot water.
  • Wearing a mask when a 2-meter distance cannot be maintained between you and others.
  • Avoiding touching your eyes, nose and mouth.
  • Coughing or sneezing into your elbow or a tissue and dispose of tissues immediately in lined wastepaper receptacles.
  • Staying home if you are experiencing any symptoms.

As a whole, CAM members have done so well with safety to date. Let’s keep it up while we move into the summer season!

IAM Crowdsourcing Best Practices for the COVID-19 Response

IAM wants to hear from each of you about the steps your company took to enact innovative solutions and new business continuity measures and how you standardized best practices to assure your customers that moving is safe.

Canada has been recognized by IAM as “having been way out in front of disseminating COVID-19 information in North America and having put together some stellar resources.” CAM President Nancy Irvine has been asked to assist with compiling the information, so let’s make sure that Canada gets on this map! We encourage all of our members to fill out the short form.

You do not need to be an international mover to send in your best practices! Many of you have already shared some of the great things you did to deal with the sudden and unknowing world we entered. So please take a few minutes and fill out this form.

We want your input and will make these best practices available once ready.

PPE Supply Hub now available

Need hand sanitizer, face masks & shields? Suppliers … want to get added as a source?

The Government of Canada has created a supply hub for resources and information to help organizations sell and buy personal protective equipment (PPE) during the COVID-19 pandemic. They're mobilizing industry to provide medical supplies, and providing information on personal protective equipment in relation to COVID-19, including expedited access and how to get authorization to sell PPE. Their information will be updated regularly.

US Movers urge government to ease mandatory masks ruling

The National Council of Moving Associations (NCMA), of which CAM is a member, is sending a letter to US TransCom regarding personal protective equipment (PPE) and the extreme summer heat and humidity. It is a well-written letter which lays out the importance of the balance of protecting workers health, while also protecting their customers during the prolonged pandemic. Worth a read!

Refusal of Unsafe Work

This 45-minute webinar (recorded by the BC Government on May 5, 2020) sets out what you need to know if your worker refuses unsafe work (look at the second recording).  The regulated four-step process for work refusal is reviewed with a sample COVID-19 scenario to help better identify potential issues you may be facing during this pandemic.  To get the most out of this webinar, we encourage you to download and follow along with this Participant Handbook (PDF, 867.4 KB).  For your convenience, here is a copy of the PowerPoint presentation (PDF, 527.9 KB).

CAM Suppliers: Your Moving Depot

cam3a-june232020.jpg cam3b-june232020.png

Your Moving Depot located in Oshawa, ON was founded in 1996 by Ken O’Hara and his daughters, Kelly and Kim. Ken had worked 38 years as a purchaser for a major van line when they decided to outsource their Supply Dept, giving him the opportunity to do his job - “working for himself”.

Kim was working for Mackie Oshawa when she joined the family business. She quickly developed bulk buying privileges at some of the largest clothing distributors in Canada and is continually seeking out the best uniform options for “clothes you can move in”!

Kelly began her career in the moving industry as a summer student at NAVL and has worked almost every facet of the industry; packing, customer service, claims, fleet, operations manager and sales. In 2003, she secured a partnership with one of Canada’s largest corrugated companies - Cascades Containerboard in Vaughan who stocks moving cartons and has the ability to custom print boxes with logos.

This small, friendly business is big on service - shipping documents, van equipment, moving cartons, uniforms, corporate apparel and promotional products. They can personalize just about anything with your logo - even face masks! Visit their website or call for more information at 888-415-8858.

CBC Report follow-up

On June 3rd CBC reported on a couple moving from Hamilton to New Brunswick whose “mover” was turned away at the NB border and dumped their stuff in a self-storage unit in Quebec. Many of you were in touch with Nancy or commenting publicly about this being the action of a rogue mover. In fact, it was not the case.

The “mover” was the couple’s contractor, Northern Elite Contracting, who moved their things without proper protection or paperwork. Not being a recognized mover, they were turned away as a non-essential service, so dropped the couple’s items off and left.

Nancy located the couple on Facebook and was working with them on a solution at the same time that East Coast Moving was (unbeknownst to each other). Nancy also spent all of June 3rd and 4th on social media debunking the rampant rumours that were spreading about movers in general, how unsafe moving during the pandemic is, and the “fishiness” of the story. It was a golden opportunity and CAM actually have received a few messages from folks reading these posts who inquired about referrals to CAM members.

East Coast moved them and Jeff Melanson says, other than their things being pretty banged up (supported by an acknowledgement that East Coast was not responsible), the remainder of the move went well and the couple are settling in for the remainder of their quarantine. The couple have communicated with Nancy several times and indicated that they were grateful for the support and advice we all provided. Well done Jeff & East Coast!

CBC did not fact-check and therefore, despite requests, are not planning a follow-up story. CAM will be though!
