President's Message

CAM_Nancy.png

I am at a loss for words. For those of you who know me well, you’re likely smirking and saying to yourself “no, not likely”. But it’s true.

Preparing for each newsletter starts on the Tuesday of the publication of the last issue with a tight turnaround so we can get it to the translation by the Tuesday before the next publication date. Most of the time, I am debating about what topics to bring up in my message (which I write in one sitting and don’t go back to wordsmith afterward), which then can include follow-up information below for readers who want to know more. But not this time. I’m tapped out.

Why (& How) You Should Actually Listen to Your Customers

camen1jan312020.jpg“The best service reps are excellent listeners. They can recall relevant details that were mentioned earlier in the case and are consistently in-tune with the customer's emotions. This saves customers from having to repeat information which adds friction to the service experience.”

This less than 5-minute read has some great advice for both listening and interacting with your customers.

A Canadian study on the mental health of long-haul drivers

camfr4jan282020.pngLakehead University in Ontario is doing a study on trucker depression. They are looking for a minimum of 210 long haul drivers to answer their survey, so they can compare statistics to the US study released in 2018 that stated that In the U.S., that because of the potential for accidents, truck drivers have one of the highest rates of injuries and illnesses of all occupations.

This study will allow for a better understanding of the factors that may influence the risk of depression in truckers. We all know a driver who is struggling with mental health issues and we’ve recently lost a few good ones to suicide.

We encourage you to read this article in Trucking News and follow the link to the survey. There are so few Canadian studies and the information coming out of this will be valuable. Please ask your drivers if they would participate in the study. They are our heartbeat. Without them, we are nothing.

Who’s the Mover?

Moving one 5MB IBM hard drive, 1956. We wonder if any members recognize what company is doing the work. Should we give you a hint? (The move took place in Ottawa). Thanks to our super-sleuth Steve Sharpe for sending this mystery image to us.
