President's Message

camengnancy-may262020.png

This pandemic certainly has been a roller coaster these past four and a half months, and it looks like we are finally nearing the end of the ride that has had unexpected turns, seemingly insurmountable slopes, scary drops, and sometimes turned us right upsidedown. Personally, I’m not a fan, thanks to a horrible experience at Expo 67 (that’s 1967 for you young’uns reading this!). But as a trooper, in March, I committed, closed my eyes, hung on until my knuckles turned white, and prayed that I would make it the whole way through!

And here we are nearing the end of the ride – a little deflated, maybe a little (or a lot) poorer; but so much more resilient and strong. I hope you’ve chosen to look at this whole situation with a positive bent – and have seen areas that you’ve been able to make some improvements in to be more efficient and more productive, which should lead to more profitability once things turn around. There is an old saying ‘out of tragedy comes good’. I sincerely believe that and I continue to wish you all well as we recover together.

As I write this, Ontario is about to release their plans for phase 3 opening. The Atlantic provinces are ‘bubbling’ and the West is well on its way to normalcy. And yes - hockey playoffs are just around the corner!! Let’s hope that Canadians carry on being responsible in their actions, the curve continues to plank, and CAM is able to play a meaningful part in providing safe moves.

There was no ride bracelet offered at the beginning of this journey and I hope we don’t need to buy another ticket for the coaster this fall!

Be smart. Be vigilant. Be safe.

CAM Supplier:  Goodcase Storage Container

cameng-May262020-4a.jpg

camjuly212020-4.png

GoodCaseLogo.jpgAre you looking for additional storage space? Goodcase Storage Container Ltd. has a solution!

Our steel made storage containers are foldable, moveable and stackable. They are durable with high strength anti-slippery plywood floors with laminated cover. Rain shields, rubber seal and rainproof vents make the containers totally ventilated and water and rodent proof. They are easy to lift and move as they fit with various lifting systems including carriage tube, mule lifting systems, forklift sleeves and horizontal lifting. We can individually customize them based on size requirements, insulation, multiple doors, e-track or tie-down rings, diamond-plate steel floors and removable wheel systems.

The foldable containers are flat packed on transportation, 12 units can be transferred on one truck from one site to another. This feature makes transportation more easily and affordably, which is a big saving compared to the traditional ones. They can be easily installed in around 20 minutes per unit, which can help to deal with emergencies, disasters instantly, and can help to expand your storage space immediately.

Thanks to the light-weight skeleton steel design, they are strong and reliable, which brings them a long-lasting life cycle of over 30 years. They can also be stacked up to three units high when fully loaded for greater warehouse utilization. With the waterproof and fire-resistant feature, the container can be used conveniently both indoor and outdoor wherever you have some spare space. They are designed for the North American climate and can withstand a high snow load capacity.

We can help you create more storage space in an easy way. Just give us your idea! We will work with you on customizing the design to satisfy your special needs. Ask us about our Field Office and Mobile Home options! You can contact General Manager Hunter Zhai by phone at 647-325-5966 or by email.

Save Money, Save Space, Save Time.

  • For the period starting in July, up through the period beginning in November:

More border crossings collect contact information from drivers

On June 30, 2020, Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) began collecting personal information (email addresses and phone numbers) from truck drivers at several border crossings on behalf of the Public Health Agency of Canada (PHAC). As of July 9, 2020, CBSA has expanded the program at 12 additional ports of entry, bringing the total to 18 locations overall.

We have sent this update to our friends at AMSA, IAM and the National Council of Moving Associations to pass along to their members.

Travel Restrictions & Re-Opening Information

It’s impossible to keep track of who’s open, who’s allowed to go where, and who’s wearing a mask and who isn’t.   In order to help, we now have all of the provinces and territories listed with the links to that information on the main page of our COVID-19 news section.

Thanks to Trucking HR for providing the following valuable information.

The past few months have been extremely challenging as organizations, in all sectors, were forced to react to COVID-19 and the associated business implications it presented. We are particularly sensitive to the fact that our industry has played a key role, as an essential service, in keeping our economy moving.

Now, as businesses prepare to re-open all on-site operations, it’s important to take a planned approach so as not to jeopardize the health and safety of your workforce. At Trucking HR, our intention is to supply valuable information that informs your Human Resources policies and to provide practical and innovative HR tools. This guide offers insight into some of the important considerations that you will need to make when re-opening your on-site operations.

We hope that this guide will help lighten the burden of the unknown and provide you with guidance and direction.

No ‘In-Person’ Meeting in 2020

As you are aware, the planned conference for Edmonton in November was postponed until 2021, with the hopes that we might be able to pull off a smaller, informal gathering of some sort in the Toronto area to replace it for this year. After considerable research and meetings with hotel executives and meeting planners throughout North America, as well as consultation with CAM’s Executive, CAM is halting any meeting planning and will not be going forward with an in person or extensive virtual meeting this fall or winter. CAM assumes a huge risk, as well as a significant expense, to pull one off.

We will continue to evaluate our options for hosting an uncomplicated virtual option for a November one-hour Annual General Meeting. We will advise the membership once that is worked out.

The next in-person conference will be Edmonton on November 14-16, 2021. We negotiated a new, spectacularly fair, contract with Sutton Place Hotel in Edmonton and our full slate of speakers were happy to delay a year and join us then. We will continue to work with Edmonton Tourism to put on a great show next year!

We’d like to thank our sponsors who have generously continued to support us through these crazy times. We look forward to the 16 months ahead of us!

Don’t forget to mark your calendar for the 2021 CAM Conference – November 14 – 16, 2021, Sutton Place Hotel, Edmonton AB.

‘Disabled’ cellphones no defence against distracted driving charges

Distracted driving is now under more scrutiny than ever. A recent decision of the British Columbia Court of Appeal has confirmed that holding a cellphone while driving is an offence, even when it is disabled or turned off.
