President's Message

camengnancy-may262020.png

‘We are all in this together’ was a phrase we all heard a lot in the beginning of March when our world turned upside down and we began to face challenges like we’ve never seen before. It has been a half year of isolation, pivoting, fast thinking, unexpected expenses, unanticipated labour issues, frustration, and even boredom in some cases.

Fast forward six months and 40 were all in it together - physically distanced of course - for an afternoon of golf on September 14th. Sure, it’s not the whole gang getting together, like we would at our annual conference, but it was really nice to see the eyes and the forehead of many of our members and friends. I know several of the participants said the same thing that I was thinking … that we really are a family and it’s been one heck of a year and we needed to see each other.

If you’ve never attended a CAM event, or you’ve not really participated on a committee or even utilized our website or social media materials, you really are missing out. Companies join our CAM ‘family’ for different reasons. The main reasons are to give their company credibility and to receive referrals for business. While both of these are incredibly important, it’s equally beneficial to actively participate.

Not only can you learn a lot from networking with your colleagues, active participation in CAM can indeed bring in business. While you are all competitors, relationships with other CAM members can bring you far greater benefits than you could ever imagine. It seems crazy to think, but one day you’ll answer your phone and it will be a mover from another province offering you a lead from one of their customers who needs a local move down the street from your warehouse. Or perhaps there’s a move that is too large for one mover to handle and they call upon you to help or provide specialized equipment or labour to make the move a success.

While it is great for you to simply put our logo on your website and social media pages, I strongly urge you to get involved as well. An easy way is to like and share our social media posts. These are written in a way that allows you to provide your own narrative as an introduction to your post. Even if it’s a “Proud to be a member of CAM” intro, it associates you with professional moving services.

In pre-COVID times, I would have encouraged you to attend this year’s conference. With that postponed until November 2021, why not circle your calendar now and plan to join us in Edmonton next year?

If you’re new to CAM, I highly recommend you actively involve yourself in your professional association. Get to know all of the suppliers, and your fellow provincial movers. Become a certified Canadian Moving Professional and have your new staff review the training videos that are free to you. There are lots of other ideas below in the newsletter on how CAM can help you reach your business potential.

Everyone is a competitor in our association, but we are all united by common goal of providing an honourable, high standard of service to the public. This year has been like no other, not just because of COVID, but because we have had an unprecedented number of publicized scams, which have dragged all movers through the mud. CAM has worked very hard all summer to promote trusted and reliable movers who are certified as professional and adhere to a code of ethics. After all, we are all in this together and we want you all to succeed.

And as always, as COVID cases start to increase, continue to be smart, vigilant and safe.

Eight ways CAM can help you reach your business potential

CAM offers resources to its members that will help to expand business opportunities and enhance the company’s potential. Are you using any or all of these resources to help build your company and set you apart from that cut-rate criminal element?

  1. Use CAM’s logos – they are a trusted trademark that reflects quality and professionalism. Use them on your website, social media sites, advertising and sales tools.
  2. Hand out CAM’s printed Choosing a Mover pamphlets to customers – these are available in English and French in printed and digital formats.
  3. Use CAM’s truck decals – they are an easy and visible way to advertise your affiliation with a trusted trade association.
  4. Link to CAM’s website – link to CAM’s website from your website and refer your prospective customers to CAM’s website to verify your membership.
  5. Access CAM’s education resources – train your employees using CAM’s members-only online education resources – they’re absolutely free. They include training videos and our popular Canadian Professional Mover course.
  6. Access other Members-Only resources – CAM’s dedicated members-only website contains useful insider information to help you deliver a top-notch professional moving service.
  7. Display your CAM membership certificate – proudly display your membership in a trusted trade association, in your front office or boardroom and on your website.
  8. Like and follow CAMs social media platforms - share our consumer posts to your site – the messaging is already done for you. You’ll find the links at the bottom of this newsletter.

Members Only Section of Website is Up and Running!

cameng-sept152020-membersection.png

On May 5th CAM launched it’s new website (www.mover.net) with enhanced information for both consumers on the move and for members. Part of the revamping project was to move our highly-used Canadian Professional Mover (CPM) course and training modules to new platforms. Unfortunately, during this phase of the website development, these online education resources had to be pulled out of commission.

We’re pleased to say that all of these resources are available once again through a new Members Only portal that can be accessed from our home page.

  • The CPM course uses state-of-the art software that should provide registered students with a more trouble-free learning experience. We’ve already had four graduates in the last week!
  • Our popular training videos for helpers and new employees, and packing and unpacking are now available! These were created using an Adobe Flash Video and this format won’t be supported after December 31st but we are hopeful we’ll find a new format to support them going forward.

Your new and seasoned employees can benefit from using our Members Resources and education tools – and it’s all included in your annual membership fee. Members will need to obtain their new user codes from CAM to access these resources and students will have to be personally registered to take the CPM course.

COVID-19 Update

cam4apr232020.jpg

Speech from the Throne Highlights – Sept. 23, 2020

Canadians need good jobs they can rely on.

To help make that happen, the Government will launch a campaign to create over one million jobs, restoring employment to previous levels. This will be done by using a range of tools, including direct investments in the social sector and infrastructure, immediate training to quickly skill up workers, and incentives for employers to hire and retain workers.

One way the Government will create these jobs is by extending the Canada Emergency Wage Subsidy right through to next summer. The Government will work with businesses and labour to ensure the program meets the needs of the health and economic situation as it evolves.

Another example of how the Government will create jobs is by significantly scaling up the Youth Employment and Skills Strategy, to provide more paid work experiences next year for young Canadians.

This fall, in addition to extending the wage subsidy, the Government will take further steps to bridge vulnerable businesses to the other side of the pandemic by:

  • Expanding the Canada Emergency Business Account to help businesses with fixed costs;
  • Improving the Business Credit Availability Program;
  • And introducing further support for industries that have been the hardest hit, including travel and tourism, hospitality, and cultural industries like the performing arts.

Provincial Restrictions and updated information

Do you find yourself trying to figure out what’s happening in a province that you have to make a delivery in?  With COVID on the rise, things are changing rapidly once again.  In order to help, we now have all of the provinces and territories listed with the links to that information on the main page of our COVID-19 news section.

Stay up to Date!

We encourage you to check our COVID-19 section regularly on our website, as Nancy is still monitoring the various government briefings every day and that’s where we’re posting breaking news.

Be smart. Be vigilant. Be safe.

Golf Review

If you’re a fan of fall golf (what golfer wouldn’t be?) then the physically-distanced CAM golf day would have been a perfect day for you! Due to the course restrictions, we had our maximum 40 participants enjoy a lovely day out at Carlisle Golf Club. Everybody was masked up when not on the course and everybody abided by COVID rules when we were allowed to socialize and the day went off without a hitch.

We’d like to thank all of the participants and our wonderful sponsors who provided prizes for a unique twist on the hole-in-one contest. Golfers, don’t forget to reach out to your prize sponsor to say thanks!

October 21 – 23, 2020:  International Association of Movers Conference

camEF-sept12020-5b.jpg.png

For the first time ever, IAM is going virtual – and is the only moving conference in 2020! They have a great line-up of speakers and sessions, as well as breakouts, networking, and more. In fact, the tentative agenda has just been released. The great thing about this conference is that you’ll be able to meet with exhibitors or attendees one-on-one in your own private “room”. And just like any other conference, you can’t be at two sessions at once. With this virtual conference, you’ll be able to attend one session and watch the other session up to 30 days after the conference is over.

This is the mother of all conferences and is usually attended by thousands of delegates from around the world. If you’ve never been to an IAM conference before, now’s your chance! And you can go to San Diego without leaving your home office! To register or to find out more about the conference and the amazing Swapcard app they are using at click on www.iammeetings.com

Review the Virtual Annual Meeting Attendee List to see who is attending. Chances are, if you're not there, your friends and your competitors will be.
