CAM News & Updates

President's Message

CAM02082018a.jpgSomething’s changed.  You may notice that our newsletter looks different.  This is the first newsletter with our new publisher – MediaEdge.  MediaEdge will be producing our biweekly newsletter, managing our new digital format, and producing our print magazine, The Canadian Mover, with that first issue coming out this Fall.  We are excited about the opportunities that this new relationship will afford us.  We now have more writing staff, expanded production capabilities, and these new platforms allow our suppliers and supporters so many more opportunities to promote their products and services. We hope you like it.

We’ve seen, throughout the Spring and Summer, stories about moving failures – epic moving failures in some instances.  Internally, we’ve seen that calls into our office and website clicks have increased as consumers are doing their due diligence – by contacting CAM to find a trusted, reliable mover.  Our consistent messaging for the past eight months is starting to sink in with the public.  I sincerely hope that this has parlayed into more quality moves for you this year.

As we are passing the halfway point of “silly season”, we wish you health and safety throughout August.

Government of Canada procurement
The Government of Canada is improving and simplifying its processes for businesses to bid on tenders. Public Services and Procurement Canada (PSPC) has posted a news item Did you know you can submit certain bids electronically? on BuyandSell.gc.ca to remind bidders across the country that they can now submit bids electronically for certain PSPC tenders using Canada Post’s epost Connect online service. Tenders for which this option is available will be posted on Buyandsell.gc.ca and clearly identified as accepting bid submission files electronically. Bidders are encouraged to take advantage of this bid submission option when available. For more information, click here
Importing used mattresses into Canada

Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) officials in Toronto recently reinterpreted a provision banning the importation of non-fumigated, used mattresses. There is supposed to be an exception for Settlers, Returning Canadians, Forces Employees and Diplomats (the reasoning being that people would fumigate their mattresses if they were infested with bed bugs anyways), however CBSA appeared to be applying a blanket restriction that was considered both unreasonable and unmanageable and that, in many cases, would result in the destruction of mattresses held for delivery.

Members of CAM’s International Committee hopped on this issue immediately and individually reached out to their contacts at CBSA. In less than a week, through a fantastic effort and teamwork, the committee members were able to work with the CBSA representatives to get the newest ruling reversed back to the intended interpretation of the regulations.

CAM was very concerned that, without a quick response, this CBSA ruling would spread quickly across Canada and create unnecessary inconvenience and expense for Canadians. So, bravo to Adi Shaked, James Lee, Kym Leroux, Tom Finlay Jr, Serge Nadeau and Leonard Hoyt for your passion and effort during a very busy time.

New Jersey Senate Bill passed

Look out unlicensed operators in New Jersey! On June 25, 2018 the New Jersey Senate unanimously passed Bill S781 which, after the Assembly passes their portion of the Bill and the Governor signs it, will become law. This provides increased consumer protection from deceptive unlicensed people posing as movers in advertisements. We’ll keep you posted on developments.
Remembering Bryan Hoolahan

CAM02082018b1.jpgWe recently learned of the untimely passing of Bryan Hoolahan, a former driver for Alero Moving and Storage in Calgary. Our industry is a tight, interconnected community and I’m sure many of you would have met or known Bryan as he traversed the country. Bryan most recently resided in Edmonton, but was not at home at the time of his passing.

Bryan’s family has put up a Go Fund Me page to help with transporting his body home, funeral expenses and for family left behind. For those interested in helping Bryan’s family financially, please click this image to be redirected to the Go Fund Me page. Thank you for your support!

Can you answer 8 questions?

You may have seen that a third-year student at University of British Columbia (UBC) is researching issues surrounding accountability and administrative efficiency in long-distance moving networks.  Asrai Ord has been getting a wonderful response from our members, as well as from AMSA and IAM members, to her call to answer a quick five-minute survey.  CAM President Nancy Irvine spoke to Asrai in July and clearly the results of the survey are showing patterns that we will provide us with some actionable items to address.

We plan to publish her findings as part of an effort to further establish trust and efficiency within the moving industry and possibly increase the competitive advantage that reputable movers have.

This study is purely voluntary but could result in some excellent research to aide our industry.  Grab a coffee and click here to do the survey!

US and Canadian Moving: New Paths for a New Generation

CAM03082018e.JPGWe’re so much alike…and then we’re not. There’s a lot to think about when comparing US and Canadian moving trends: electronic logging devices and how they’ve affected the way US companies are working; Millennials’ desire for apps and uber-type services and the rogue operations resulting from that want; the need to up your social media and customer reviews game to even get a look from prospective customers; and the rising popularity of virtual surveys. Scott is going to update us on US trends and the general state of their moving industry. Knowing that developments in the US will surely spill into Canada, this is guaranteed to be an hour well spent.
