President's Message

CAM 1.png

You know when you’re old and tired and you need to be rejuvenated to work properly? I certainly know that feeling! Well, our poor old website (which is functioning on very old programming) is in need of a picker-upper, and we hope will have a boost and be fully functional in time to be launched in late April, in time for May is Moving Month 2020.

I know some of you have been super frustrated with our Certified Professional Movers Course being occasionally inaccessible. We certainly appreciate your patience while we do the triage on it. Well, we’ve got a workaround for right now and are looking at a much smoother operation in the Spring. We still have plenty of students going through to get their CPM designation, so it’s important to us to have it work correctly. (By the way, it’s still functional, so if you haven’t got your CPM certification yet, “Winter is Coming” and you’ll have time to complete it.

So, here’s your chance to give us some input on the website. We’re reorganizing the site to arrange the information into a more ordered fashion and are adding more content to it. Is there something that you’ve looked for and can’t find, or wish we had up on the site? Please let Marian or myself know so we can get it added!

In your spare time (ha ha), take a cruise around www.mover.net and see what you can’t find!

Our golfers actually like spiders!

What a great day of golf. 13 teams played superstitious golf on Friday the 13th at the Royal Niagara Golf Course and were challenged by some interesting obstacles. Spiders, umbrellas, Meow Mix, rainbows and an actual soothsayer who told everyone their future! Besides a few sprinkles mid-way through, the weather was fantastic for fall golf. Next year’s golf day will be announced shortly. Hope you’ll consider joining us.

Annual Conference & Trade Show

Sunday-Tuesday, November 17-19, 2019

camenglish3A_sept172019.jpg

It’s full steam ahead with conference planning now that our golf day is out of the way!

We believe that we are providing you with engaging speakers and topics that are relevant to today’s business and will keep you ahead of the curve!

Megann Willson will be joining us to provide practical advice on how to manage your online reputation and on how, and when, to react to negative reviews and comments.

Miki Ho is going to ask you if you can afford the risk with your cybersecurity. CAM is in the midst of tightening up its online presence and thinks you should too. Miki will be on hand to discuss just how extensive data breaches are and how you can protect yourself.

Arguably, drivers are the most important part of our business. Without them, customers are not going to get their things on time or necessarily in good shape. But driver attentiveness is on the wane, putting themselves, and your customers’ shipments, in danger. Dave Earle believes that changing driver behaviour starts at the top and is going to discuss with us the importance of management and operations folks helping their drivers, and other employees, to understand and alter their current habits to provide safe and efficient performance.

Straight from the International Association of Movers conference in Chicago, IAM President and Vice President Chuck White and Brian Limperopolous are going to update us on the world moving industry and the results from the first Global Moving and Mobility Standards Summit, which they will be hosting in October.

And there will be plenty of opportunity for us to openly and freely discuss the status of the Canadian moving industry. Results from UBC student Asrai Ord’s study of trust and efficiency in the Canadian market will be shared. We’re hoping that her results will serve as a jumping off point for more industry-based discussions and problem-solving on what the future may look like for today’s moving companies.

And, finally, back by popular demand, we will be hosting a discussion with several of our industry’s top van line and independent movers’ executives on a variety of current topics that are of interest to our membership. Do you have something you’d like them to discuss? Contact CAM with the topic(s).

Register Now!

We hope you will strongly consider coming to the conference and taking advantage of the opportunity to learn and, more importantly, to connect with fellow CAM members and suppliers.

Don't Plug Into That USB Port

camenglishfrs6_sept172019.JPGI know the story.  You left the house/office without your charger, but you have the USB cable (why you'd do that, I dunno).  At the public WiFi hotspot, there are some USB outlets to juice up your device.  But did you know that those public USB ports can easily be injected with malware, that goes onto your phone (and potentially all your devices) once you plugin. It's called Juice Jacking, and it can be deadly.  So stay away from the USB...and while you're at it, read this article from Threat Brief to tell you how the USB port can infect your device.  (Reprinted with permission from Tech Expert Jim Spellos, Meeting-U.com)
