Bill S-224, the Canada Prompt Payment Act, reaches second reading in the Senate

Bill S-224, the Canada Prompt Payment Act, reached second reading in the Senate on April 19.

Bill S-224 mandates that government institutions make progress payments to a contractor on a monthly basis, or at shorter intervals provided for in the respective contract. This payment requirement is consistent down the contractual chain.

It also accounts for milestone payments, and stated contractors have the right to suspend work, terminate a contract and collect interest on late payment.

This news follows a prompt payment summit that was held earlier in April where stakeholders and parliamentarians discussed ways to move forward on prompt payment legislation at the provincial and territorial level. Senators and members of parliament, including cabinet ministers, were in attendance, offering their support.

CISC Steel Centre creating impact in Education and Research at the University of Alberta

Opened in January 2016, the CISC Centre for Steel Structures Education and Research at the University of Alberta has already began to impact students and steel research under the leadership of Professor Robert Driver, Ph.D., P.Eng.

Fourth year students were recently treated to a hands-on demonstration of BIM software arranged by the Advisory Council of Investor (Founding) Members Collins Steel, Supreme Steel, Waiward Steel and CISC. Several research programs have also been launched by the Centre that are geared to improving safety, economics, and productivity, such as unifying the design procedures for “cantilever-plate” connections, developing a means of accurately assessing the need for stiffeners for flanges loaded locally in torsion, and developing a better means of assessing robustness of steel-framed structures when subjected to localised damage.

As activities ramp up over the coming year, watch for the announcement of a full public launch of the CISC Steel Centre in the fall.

CISC Manitoba & NW Ontario gear up for Student Careers Expo on May 11 in  Winnipeg

Over 1800 grade 12 students from Winnipeg and surrounding municipalities will visit the WCXA sponsored event, where every trade is featured and students have an opportunity to see and discuss what things are like in work areas they may be interested in. We look forward to introducing the students to all the career possibilities in the steel industry!
